Chapter 8 - THE HEARING

The preliminary injunction hearing took place nineteen days after the helicopter chase.

Press lined the courthouse steps.

Victoria ignored them.

She wore navy, not black.

A deliberate choice Celeste called “power without mourning.”

Ethan sat across the room beside his attorneys looking cleaner and calmer than he deserved.

He still knew how to wear innocence well.

Sophie sat behind Celeste, pale but steady.

The hearing was not yet the whole case.

It concerned asset restraint, operational control, and protective orders over the trust and company accounts.

But truth began in pieces there.

Celeste called Jonah first.

Then the forensic accountant.

Then Sophie.

When Sophie described Ethan’s promises, his lawyer smiled like he had been waiting.

“Ms. Lane, you were in an affair with a married man for eight months, correct?”

“Yes.”

“You lied repeatedly to Mrs. Hale?”

“Yes.”

“So why should this court believe you now?”

Sophie stared at him.

“Because now I know what the lie was for.”

Even Victoria felt that one.

Then Ethan testified.

He called the transfer plans “contingency models.”

He called the media draft “precautionary communication.”

He called the forged narrative about Victoria’s instability “rough language never intended for use.”

And the helicopter?

“A reckless personal meltdown.”

Celeste rose slowly.

“Mr. Hale, did you or did you not write that the board should be encouraged to see your wife as emotionally unstable so that operating authority could shift to you?”

Ethan adjusted his cuff.

“That phrase was taken out of context.”

Celeste lifted a page.

“What context improves it?”

He had none.

Then came the moment the judge truly turned.

Celeste introduced the voicemail about donors and control.

Ethan’s own voice filled the courtroom:

Once the board sees Victoria unravel, they’ll hand me the controls…

The silence afterward was almost physical.

Victoria did not look at him.

She looked at the judge.

And she knew from the older woman’s face that the mask had finally come off.

The court granted the injunction.

All contested funds frozen.

All trust-linked documents preserved.

Ethan barred from representing Hale Aviation or the Marian Hale Trust in any capacity.

Victoria retained immediate full control, pending trial.

Outside the courthouse, reporters screamed questions.

One shouted, “Mrs. Hale, do you regret chasing your husband in the helicopter?”

Victoria stopped.

Turned.

And answered the only way she could.

May you like

“I regret marrying a man who thought grief made me easy to erase.”

Then she walked away.
