Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE STAIRS

Vanessa Monroe stood at the top of the staircase with one hand on the carved banister and a slow, poisonous smile on her face.

Claire had seen that smile before.

It was the smile Vanessa wore whenever Patricia Crane praised her taste, her manners, or her “understanding of the family.” It was the smile of a woman who had already decided she belonged somewhere other people still thought was contested.

Claire started up the first step.

“What did you say to me?”

Vanessa tilted her head. Her silver dress shimmered under the chandelier.

“I said you’re almost done here.”

Then, still smiling, Vanessa looked directly into Claire’s eyes and threw herself backward.

Claire froze.

“Vanessa?!”

The silver dress flashed once against the light, then became a violent blur of limbs and marble. Vanessa hit the landing, bounced, and tumbled the rest of the way down the stairs with a scream so practiced it sounded like a cue.

Nathan rushed in first.

Then Patricia.

Then two security men.

Vanessa curled on the floor, crying instantly, one hand gripping her ankle.

“She pushed me!”

Claire stared in disbelief.

“No! She jumped!”

Nathan turned on her so fast his black suit coat swung out behind him.

“What did you do?”

“I didn’t touch her. Check the cameras! She—”

Nathan grabbed her arm.

Hard.

“Eight.”

Claire frowned through the shock.

“What?”

Nathan turned toward the men.

“Break eight ribs.”

For one insane second, Claire thought she had heard him wrong.

Then the men moved.

She screamed once before the first strike landed. A white-hot burst exploded through her side. Then another. Then a third. She tried to twist away, but one man pinned her shoulders while the other drove pain into her chest with horrifying precision. Claire heard something crack inside her body and knew, with a terror almost bigger than the pain, that Nathan was counting exactly what he had ordered.

By the time they let go, she could barely breathe.

She lay on the marble floor, cheek pressed against stone, tasting blood.

Vanessa was no longer crying.

She was watching.

Nathan crouched beside Claire and threw a check onto her chest.

“Forty million dollars.”

Claire blinked through tears.

He leaned closer, voice low and flat.

“Take it and disappear.”

She forced air into her lungs and looked up at him.

“You think… this empire belongs to you?”

Nathan laughed softly.

The sound hurt more than the ribs.

Hours later Claire lay in a private clinic bed, every breath a knife. Her cream dress had been cut away. Her side was wrapped. Her lip was split. The forty-million-dollar check—now torn across the middle—sat crumpled in her fist.

“Eight ribs,” she whispered, crying silently.

A nurse closed the door and approached the bed.

She was pale, calm, and too careful with her eyes.

“Mrs. Crane,” she said quietly, “should I keep calling you that?”

Claire looked at her.

The nurse lowered her voice further.

“Ms. Kingsley… should I open the file now?”

May you like

Claire went still.

Because there was only one reason anyone alive would know that name.
