Maribel did not fear divorce.
She feared land.
The Ashford estate had been losing money for years.
Agricultural income was down.
Maintenance costs were enormous.
The family trust held valuable acreage bordering a proposed interstate logistics corridor.
A development company had offered $74 million for 600 acres.
If sold, the Ashfords could stabilize everything.

Debt was.
Private loans.
Bridge financing.
Personal guarantees.
If the land sale failed, Edmund and Maribel faced financial collapse.
