Chapter 1 - THE LOCKED BATHROOM

Daniel already had a fistful of Emily’s hair when she understood he was not going to let go.

He yanked her out of the bathroom doorway.

Her bare feet slid across the bedroom floor.

“Daniel!”

He forced her downward.

Emily caught herself on one hand, twisted hard, and tore free.

“You need to learn who runs this family!”

Noah started crying in the crib.

Margaret moved first.

She crossed the bedroom, lifted the newborn securely into both arms, and turned away from Emily.

“Give me my son!”

Emily lunged.

Daniel caught her shoulder.

She slammed his hand away, reached Margaret, and pulled Noah safely against her chest.

Then she ran.

Bathroom.

Door.

Lock.

Daniel hit the other side almost immediately.

Bang.

Bang.

Bang.

“Open the door.”

Emily backed toward the sink.

Noah trembled against her, his tiny face red from crying.

“Shh. Mommy’s here.”

Then the baby monitor beside the sink crackled.

Emily froze.

It was an older audio monitor they had stopped using downstairs because its battery was unreliable. She had brought it into the bathroom two days earlier while washing bottles and forgotten it there.

A voice came through.

Margaret.

Not live.

Recorded.

“She’s exhausted. That’s the point.”

Emily stopped breathing.

Outside the door, the pounding stopped too.

Daniel had heard it.

The monitor continued.

Then Daniel’s recorded voice:

“Once she gives up the baby, she’ll listen.”

Emily stared at the device.

Outside, silence.

Then a soft metallic sound.

Claire? No. Emily’s eyes snapped to the doorknob.

Margaret had apparently kept the small emergency bathroom key.

Emily heard her whisper something outside.

Then Daniel pushed the key into the lock.

Emily backed into the far corner.

Phone in one hand.

Noah in the other arm.

Monitor still running.

“How long have you two been planning this?”

The key turned.

Emily dialed 911 before the latch moved.

Her voice was calm when the dispatcher answered.

“My husband is trying to force open a locked bathroom while I’m holding our newborn.”

The doorknob stopped.

Daniel heard her.

The key withdrew.

For the first time that night, the silence outside felt afraid.

Police arrived eleven minutes later.

Daniel did not resist.

Margaret insisted it was a “family argument.”

Emily said nothing until she and Noah were in a separate room with an officer.

Then she handed over the monitor.

The recording contained forty-seven minutes of saved audio.

The line about making her exhausted was not the beginning.

Three nights earlier, Margaret had said:

“Once she agrees to hand him over for a weekend, the rest becomes easy.”

The rest of what?

Emily listened.

Then heard Daniel answer:

“The movers are already booked.”
