Chapter 13 - WHAT THEO THOUGHT THE MOVE MEANT
Theo had not believed the family was moving together.
He believed Solomon was taking him away from Audrey.
Why?
The corporate housing brochure showed:
a father,
a boy,
a moving truck.
The stock image happened to have no mother.
Theo saw Solomon circling the townhouse address.
He asked:
“Does Mommy come?”
Solomon, distracted, answered:
“We’ll see.”
Two words.
That was all.
Theo interpreted:
maybe Mommy does not come.
Later Solomon told him not to tell Audrey until Friday.
The fear grew.
By the time Theo opened the suitcase, he was not merely curious.
He was looking for proof.
A five-year-old had been trying to solve an adult secret.
Audrey felt furious all over again.
Solomon heard the therapist explain this and cried.
“I never intended that.”
Theo’s therapist answered:
“Children live with what they understand, not what you intended.”
Another sentence he wrote down.
The custody plan expanded slowly after months of compliance and Theo’s comfort. Solomon traveled from Charlotte; the inconvenience was his to solve.
Hartwell promoted him after a year because he did his job well.
Professional competence and family harm remained separate truths.
Audrey stayed in Ohio.
Her company promoted her too.
The divorce finalized fourteen months later.
Property and retirement assets were divided. Solomon absorbed more of the personal credit balance because much of it funded his concealed unemployment, while Audrey accepted that some charges had still supported the household.
Then Theo started kindergarten.
On the first day of kindergarten, Theo drew Mom, Dad, and himself in three separate houses, then added a road connecting them.
“Can roads go both ways?”
“Yes,” Audrey said.
He nodded.
Then the teacher sent home a form.
Emergency contacts.
Audrey filled hers.
Solomon filled his during a visit.
Theo looked at both forms.
“Can Grandpa James be on it?”
Audrey froze.
James was dead.
“Why?”
Theo answered:
“Because Daddy said Grandpa tells him what to do.”
Solomon went pale.
Audrey turned.
“What does that mean?”
Theo shrugged.
“Daddy talks to Grandpa in the car.”
