Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO TAUGHT THEM TO TRUST PAPER

Adrian Vale had been the family lawyer for twenty-six years.
He drafted Richard’s first partnership agreement.
Handled Eleanor’s mother’s estate.
Negotiated Julian’s executive contract.
Managed Catherine’s probate after her death.
He was not merely their attorney.
He was the person the Vales called when they needed reality translated into documents.
That was his power.
He made paper feel more trustworthy than memory.
Julian came to Maya’s hotel two days after the wedding.
She agreed to meet in the lobby with Tessa present.
Julian hated that.
Good.
He looked exhausted.
“I brought everything Adrian gave me.”
He placed a secure tablet on the table.
Emails.
Financial summaries.
A handwriting report.
Photographs of Noah entering foundation offices.
A draft timeline showing Maya’s relationship with Julian beginning shortly after Noah first obtained contract work with Vale entities.
It looked convincing.
Until Tessa asked:
“Where are the original files?”
Julian stared.
“What?”
“These are PDFs.”
“So?”
“Where are the native emails?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who assembled the packet?”
“Adrian.”
“Who commissioned the handwriting analysis?”
“Adrian.”
“Who identified the accounts?”
“Adrian.”
“Who told you Maya was involved?”
Julian’s face changed.
“Adrian.”
Tessa sat back.
“So your independent evidence is what, exactly?”
Julian looked at Maya.
Pain moved across his face.
Not enough.
Maya said:
“You locked me in a room based on a folder one man handed you.”
“I thought he was protecting Catherine’s foundation.”
“Catherine was trying to expose him.”
“We don’t know that yet.”
Maya stared.
“Then why did he cut the power?”
Julian had no answer.
He took out his own phone.
“One thing.”
He opened a message thread.
Adrian had texted Julian two nights before the wedding:
Do not confront Maya until after the ceremony. If she believes the marriage is secure, she will have less reason to run.
Another:
Get her signature before dawn. Noah’s counsel may seek emergency suppression once they realize how much we have.
Another:
Do not involve Richard. He will become emotional about Catherine.
Maya read them slowly.
Julian whispered:
“I thought he was trying to protect my family.”
“You wanted to believe him.”
“Yes.”
“Because?”
Julian looked down.
“Because I was terrified you were using me.”
There.
The vulnerable truth beneath the violence.
Still not an excuse.
Maya said:
“Fear explains why you were easy to manipulate.”
Julian looked up.
“It does not excuse what you did to me.”
He nodded.
May you like
“I know.”
For the first time, Maya believed he might.
