Chapter 5 - WHAT CATHERINE RECORDED
The memory card contained nine video files.
Not one.
The first had been recorded eleven days before Catherine’s death.
She sat in her home office, no makeup, hair tied back, speaking directly to the screen.
“My name is Catherine Vale. If this recording is being watched because I’m dead, missing, or declared unstable, do not assume the official story is complete.”
Julian watched with Richard, Eleanor, Maya, Tessa, and an independent forensic examiner.
No Adrian.
No family staff.
No one who owed Adrian loyalty.
Catherine described irregular payments from the foundation.
At first:
consulting fees.
Then:
risk assessments.
Then:
emergency compliance vendors.
The vendors changed names but used overlapping bank-routing patterns.
She traced them to a trust services firm in Delaware.
Beneficial ownership hidden.
She suspected Adrian.
Not because his name appeared.
Because he controlled the legal justifications for every exception.
In video four, Catherine said:
“Adrian is not stealing by forging every transaction. He is creating reasons legitimate people sign bad transactions.”
Maya felt cold.
That was elegant.
And worse than simple theft.
Video six mentioned Noah.
Not by name.
“A new systems contractor noticed token duplication anomalies. I have not approached him because I do not know who is safe.”
Noah had not even known Catherine noticed him.
Video eight changed everything.
Catherine held up a red paper ledger.
Handwritten entries.
Dates.
Vendor names.
Initials.
Amounts.
“I found this in Adrian’s archive cabinet after he told me no physical reconciliation records existed.”
Then:
“If anything happens to me, the person responsible is Adrian Vale.”
Eleanor began crying.
But Catherine continued.
“Responsible does not necessarily mean he killed me. It means he created the pressure, the financial concealment, and the reason I no longer believe ordinary channels are safe.”
That sentence mattered.
Maya looked at Julian.
He understood too.
Catherine had been careful.
She was not making a murder accusation without evidence.
Then the final video.
Recorded the morning she died.
“I am meeting a state regulator tonight. I have copied the Northgate ledger. Adrian knows I found it.”
Catherine leaned closer.
“If the ledger disappears, check the foundation’s archived insurance-review system. He never understood that document imaging preserves deleted attachments separately.”
The video ended.
Richard whispered:
“Insurance review.”
Tessa turned to Maya.
“Your brother’s server migration included archived insurance systems.”
Maya nodded.
