Chapter 12 - THE ESCAPE PLAN

Margaret had planned for disappearance.
That moved the case beyond a family arrangement even in the eyes of the most skeptical prosecutor.
The plane tickets had never been used.
Rebecca remembered why.
“I refused to leave the country.”
She had forgotten the details because Margaret framed it at the time as a temporary relocation to avoid “custody chaos.”
Rebecca said no.
Margaret adjusted.
She kept Ethan in New Mexico instead.
The passports showed another level of preparation.
Ethan’s passport application used Rebecca as mother.
Father: deceased.
That lie had required more forged documents.
Daniel stared at the copies when his lawyer showed him.
“She erased me.”
I heard about his reaction through Lena.
My own response was different.
“She erased all of us.”
That was the point.
Margaret did not steal Ethan to love him.
She stole him to control a trust.
Every emotional story she told afterward was scaffolding.
The prosecutor added charges tied to identity fraud and custodial interference.
Patrick Hale accepted a plea and agreed to testify.
Dr. Warren Hale provided a sworn statement admitting professional misconduct.
Rebecca waived any claim to the secret investment account.
Daniel agreed to restitution for trust money unknowingly routed into his old business.
I focused on giving birth.
The pregnancy was healthy.
The baby was definitely male.
Daniel knew.
He did not celebrate.
That mattered.
When his attorney told him the certified result, Daniel reportedly said, “The sex of the baby doesn’t fix what I did.”
For once, correct.
He sent one message through Lena:
I am sorry I made our children’s sex into a measure of your worth.
I did not answer.
Apologies do not always require a response to be real.
At thirty-seven weeks, I developed high blood pressure.
Nothing catastrophic.
But enough that my doctor recommended careful monitoring and less stress.
Ethan became intensely protective.
He packed my hospital bag twice.
He put snacks in it.
A toy dinosaur.
Three comic books.
And a note that said FOR MY LITTLE BROTHER IF HE GETS SCARED.
I cried when I found it.
Rebecca moved temporarily closer so Ethan would have continuity if I went into labor suddenly.
Our relationship had become something strange and fragile.
Not sisters.
Not friends.
Co-mothers to a childhood neither of us had the right to own completely.
One evening, she said, “If I could go back, I would call you the first year I doubted.”
“I know.”
“I still loved him.”
“I know.”
“I was afraid losing him would kill me.”
I looked at her.
“I know that too.”
That was not forgiveness.
But it was the first time I could understand her without excusing her.
Then Margaret’s attorney made a final offer.
She would plead guilty to major fraud counts and reveal all remaining trust assets.
In exchange, she wanted one thing.
A private meeting with Daniel before sentencing.
Daniel refused.
Margaret responded by sending him a sealed envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Thomas Bennett holding newborn Daniel.

On the back, Margaret had written:
Ask Rebecca who her real father is.
