Chapter 6 - THE DEAL DANIEL OFFERED HIS SISTER
Daniel asked to plead guilty before Rachel's cooperation became public.
He offered to admit contract fraud, obstruction, and the staged gas-station evidence. In exchange, he wanted immunity from the arson charge and a sentencing recommendation below eight years.
His proffer placed everything violent on Sabrina.
According to Daniel, his sister discovered the Northstar substitution would be exposed and decided to burn the lake-house records. Daniel admitted giving her access credentials and helping create a false narrative against Elise, but he insisted he believed Sabrina intended to destroy an empty room.
“I thought Elise was staying in Richmond,” he told prosecutors. “Sabrina told me the house was empty.”
Marcus placed the proffer in front of Elise.
“We do not need your permission to negotiate,” he said. “But I will not hide the choice from you.”
Elise read the sentence twice.
I believed my wife was elsewhere.
Daniel had texted her at 9:36 that night.
Running late. Don't wait up at the lake.
He knew exactly where she was.
“He is not confessing,” Elise said. “He is editing.”
Marcus agreed. But a prosecutor's job was not to reject every imperfect witness. Sabrina had not left fingerprints at the scene. Her phone appeared to remain at her condominium in Richmond. Rachel never saw the driver. The journal's pressure marks were suggestive, not a direct command. Daniel could connect Sabrina to the scheme.
“If his testimony proves she set the fire, a jury may convict her,” Marcus said.
“And his part?”
“He would serve years in federal prison.”
“For trying to burn records while his wife happened to be inside?”
“That is not how I would describe it.”
“It is how he will.”
Marcus closed the file. “Then help me prove more.”
Elise returned to the journal.
The missing page mattered because someone had removed it before placing the book in Margaret's safe. Sabrina apparently believed the entire journal was destroyed, meaning she did not put it there. Margaret died months before the entries were written. Daniel denied knowing the safe existed.
Someone else preserved it.
Fire investigators photographed every item recovered around the safe. Most were ordinary: deeds, product formulas, Margaret's will, an antique watch, family birth certificates. One evidence photograph showed a torn corner of white paper trapped beneath the safe's lower hinge.
The fragment was not cataloged because it appeared blank.
Under hyperspectral imaging, it revealed violet ink.
The torn edge matched the missing journal page.
Only six words remained legible:
Daniel said leave the oxygen closed.
Elise read them without understanding.
There had been no oxygen system in the lake house before the fire.
Then Nora Chen, Carter Shield's former laboratory director, explained that oxygen closed was a testing term. During fire-resistance trials, a sealed chamber limited airflow. Opening oxygen made materials burn faster. The phrase might refer to laboratory procedure rather than Elise.
The fragment weakened Daniel's claim that Sabrina acted alone, but it did not establish murderous intent.
Marcus rejected Daniel's offer.
Within hours, Daniel's defense leaked his proffer to a reporter—selectively. The published story said federal prosecutors had evidence Sabrina planned the fire and that Daniel was cooperating as a remorseful husband deceived by his sister.
Sabrina saw the article in detention.
The next morning, she asked for a meeting with prosecutors.
She brought her own version of the truth.
Daniel controlled Northstar through a trust in the Cayman Islands. He received seventy percent of the stolen profits. Sabrina received fifteen. The remainder paid corrupt laboratory officials and subcontractors. She admitted removing and hiding records after the fire, but denied entering the lake house.
“Daniel told me Elise had agreed to frighten the auditors,” she said. “He claimed the fire was staged with her cooperation.”
Marcus placed the journal entry in front of her.
“You wrote, ‘If the east room burns, the original tests burn with it.’”
“I meant the records room at headquarters.”
“You wrote ‘east hall suppressant—D's watch.’”
“That pressure mark could say anything.”
“Who preserved your journal?”
For the first time, Sabrina hesitated.
“Our mother.”
“Margaret died before those entries.”
Sabrina looked at the one-way glass.

Elise's father, Thomas Mercer, had been declared dead three years before the fire.
