Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING BEHIND THE BRICK

Thomas had not recorded Daniel planning the fire.
He had recorded Daniel and Sabrina planning the blame.
The conversation occurred two days before the lake house burned. Thomas placed a directional microphone outside the private dining room of a Richmond club where the siblings met after closing.
Daniel spoke first.
“If Elise reports Northstar, the contract dies.”
Sabrina answered, “Then move the samples and destroy her copy.”
“She has Margaret's records.”
“At the lake?”
“East study safe.”
“You told me there was no safe.”
“There is if Elise believes there is.”
The sentence revealed an important lie.
Daniel had sent Elise to the lake house by telling her Margaret's original panel formulas were stored there. He claimed he would meet her. He knew she would search the east study.
Sabrina's voice sharpened on the recording.
“You want the records or the wife gone?”
“I want a problem resolved.”
“Say it.”
“No.”
“Because you want me to carry the sentence?”
“Because you are the one who substituted the panels.”
“With your signature.”
“Then perhaps we should both be careful what survives.”
The recording ended there.
It proved motive, knowledge, and conflict. It still did not identify the person who entered the lake house, disabled the suppressant, and locked the fire door.
The missing journal page supplied another piece.
Sabrina had written:
D says leave the oxygen closed so the east study burns slowly enough to look electrical. He gave Morrow the watch token. Rachel buys fuel wearing E's face. I told him Elise plans to sleep there Thursday. He said that makes the story cleaner. I copied everything because if he chooses her or me, he will bury the other.
Morrow was Calvin Morrow, Carter Shield's head of security.
He had testified before the grand jury that he spent the fire night at his daughter's home in Annapolis. Cell-tower records supported him. His daughter confirmed it.
Thomas's surveillance archive contained a toll photograph proving Morrow's company SUV crossed west toward the lake at 9:12 p.m. Its license plate had been digitally misread in the original database because two characters were obscured with reflective film. Agent Desai corrected the search parameters and found the vehicle returning east at 1:03 a.m.
At 1:31, Morrow's phone reconnected to the Annapolis tower.
He could have left it at his daughter's house.
Agents arrested him before sunrise.
Morrow denied everything until they showed him Daniel's rejected cooperation proffer. Daniel had named Sabrina as the person carrying his watch token. Sabrina had named Morrow. Each expected the other to absorb the arson charge.
Morrow asked for a lawyer.
Three hours later, he accepted a proffer session.
Daniel gave him the biometric watch after exporting an authentication token to a hidden administrative profile. Morrow drove Rachel to the gas station, then left her at the rental cabin. He entered the lake house through a service door using Sabrina's procurement master key. Elise was asleep upstairs.
“Were you told she would be there?” Marcus asked.
“Daniel said she might be.”
“What were your instructions if you found her?”
Morrow stared at the table.
“Lock the rear fire door. Leave the front stairs open.”
“Why?”
“He said smoke would push her toward the study. We were supposed to destroy the safe and let her escape through the window.”
“Supposed to?”
“The fire moved faster than Daniel predicted.”
“You used Carter Shield's defective panel in the east hall, didn't you?”
Morrow nodded.
The house was a demonstration property. Its hallway normally contained Margaret's certified fire-resistant panels. Daniel ordered Morrow to replace a section with Northstar material two weeks earlier. During the fire, the fraudulent product failed exactly as Elise's laboratory tests predicted. Flame crossed the corridor in minutes instead of hours.
The cover-up nearly killed her because the crime they were hiding made the staged fire uncontrollable.
Morrow admitted pouring accelerant, suppressing the alarm, disabling the sprinkler loop, and locking the rear door. He also admitted using a signal jammer that prevented Elise's phone from reaching the security network.
“Who told you to do it?”
“Daniel designed it. Sabrina delivered the credentials and schedule. I followed it.”
Daniel and Sabrina's attorneys attacked the confession immediately. Morrow faced life imprisonment and had every reason to lie. Thomas had committed identity fraud and concealed evidence. Rachel was a paid impersonator and adulterous partner. Sabrina's journal entries were private rage, not reliable fact.
The defense had one final weapon.
Daniel's attorney produced an encrypted message recovered from Thomas's cabin. It was sent to Morrow four days before the fire.

Make certain Elise reaches the east study. The contract fraud must come into the light.
The message bore Thomas Mercer's verified digital signature.
