Chapter 1 - THE HAND BEHIND THE HATE

Grace Morgan had never heard her daughter’s voice sound like that.

Not when Claire was five and had nightmares.

Not when she was thirteen and screaming after her first heartbreak.

Not even at Caleb’s funeral, when grief turned the whole family into strangers standing in borrowed black clothes.

This voice was worse.

Raw.

Violent.

Sharp with hatred.

“YOU KILLED MY LITTLE BROTHER!”

Grace lay on the floor of the cabin and stared up at her daughter like she was looking at someone wearing Claire’s face.

The pain in her side burned every time she tried to breathe. Her blouse was wet with blood near her ribs, and the cold wooden floor beneath her smelled of damp pine, dust, and old smoke.

The wall telephone hung only six feet away.

Six feet might as well have been six miles.

Grace dragged herself forward anyway.

“HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME!”

Her fingers almost reached the receiver.

Then Claire lunged.

“NO!”

She grabbed the coiled cord with both hands and ripped the entire phone from the wall.

The mount cracked.

The receiver slammed against the floor.

Grace froze.

“Claire?!”

The dead cord dangled from Claire’s hand like a severed vein.

Claire threw it down.

Her chest heaved.

Her eyes were bright and wild.

She stepped toward Grace.

“YOU KILLED MY LITTLE BROTHER!”

“Baby… no…”

“DON’T CALL ME THAT!”

Grace’s heart thudded painfully against her ribs.

Behind Claire stood Adrian Vale.

Forty-eight.

Dark-haired.

Broad-shouldered.

A man Grace had once invited into her home for Thanksgiving dinners and business meetings and birthdays.

Now he stood at the far side of the cabin, leaning against the rough wooden counter as if this were theater staged for his private amusement.

And he was smiling.

Not warmly.

Not with pity.

With satisfaction.

Grace looked from him back to Claire.

Claire raised her boot.

Grace instinctively curled her arm across her face.

The boot came down hard—

but not on Grace’s hand.

It slammed into the floorboards inches away.

Pain shot through Grace anyway because terror had already reached her nerves.

She cried out.

Claire screamed over her.

“YOU DESERVE TO BLEED!”

Adrian laughed softly.

“That’s my girl.”

Grace looked up.

Claire’s face remained furious.

But something flickered in her eyes.

Not mercy.

Not exactly.

Panic.

A terrible, buried panic.

Grace had raised Claire. She had memorized every expression before her daughter even knew expressions could lie.

This one was wrong.

Too loud on the surface.

Too frightened underneath.

Claire stepped closer again, looming over her.

For a second her right hand opened.

Something metallic slipped from her fingers.

A set of cabin keys dropped beside Grace’s hand.

Grace’s breath caught.

Claire saw that Grace saw them.

Instantly, she kicked the keys closer while pretending to lash out again.

“LOOK AT ME!”

Adrian grinned, completely oblivious.

Grace’s pulse changed.

Claire turned partly toward Adrian and shouted:

“LET HER DIE!”

He nodded, pleased.

But behind Claire’s leg, hidden from him by the angle of her body, her fingers moved.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Pause.

Tap——

Tap——

Tap——

Pause.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Grace stared.

No.

It couldn’t—

Claire did it again.

Three short.

Three long.

Three short.

Grace’s throat tightened.

When the children were younger, Grace used to teach them silly things on camping trips—constellations, knot-tying, emergency whistles, a little Morse code because Caleb thought it made them “secret agents.”

SOS.

Claire kept her face twisted with rage.

Her voice stayed violent.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Her fingers repeated it.

Three short.

Three long.

Three short.

Grace slowly closed her hand around the keys.

The cold metal pressed into her palm.

Her entire world seemed to stop around that tiny movement.

She looked up at Claire.

“…SOS?”

For one invisible second, the fury in Claire’s face cracked.

Just enough.

A faint, desperate nod.

Then it was gone.

Adrian stepped closer, still smiling.

Grace stared at her daughter in absolute disbelief.

May you like

Claire was not attacking her.

Claire was trying to save her.
