Chapter 8 - CALEB’S LAST RECORDING

The standoff lasted eleven seconds.
Then Adrian laughed softly.
“Fine.”
He lifted both hands.
Claire moved to Grace’s side.
“Get the laptop,” Grace said.
Claire dropped to the floor, yanked open the hatch, and pulled the device free.
Adrian’s eyes darkened.
“There it is.”
Grace saw it then.
Not fear.
Possession.
The laptop mattered more to him than either woman.
That told her all she needed to know.
“Open Caleb’s file,” Grace said.
Claire did.
The video played again.
Caleb appeared on screen, sitting in what looked like the warehouse office, face drawn and voice low.
“If you’re watching this, something happened before I could get the file to Mom.”
Adrian took one step forward.
Grace aimed the gun higher.
He stopped.
Caleb continued:
“I found the transfers. They’re routing through North Harbor Maintenance, but the authorization codes aren’t Mom’s. They’re Adrian’s.”
Claire started crying silently.
Grace kept watching.
“Mom thinks it’s just financial fraud. I don’t. There’s insurance on Warehouse Six that doesn’t make sense. If that building goes, someone gets a huge payout and the board can trigger emergency restructuring.”
Grace went cold.
The emergency board resolution.
Adrian wanted a crisis.
Caleb looked offscreen for a second, then back.
“If anything happens to me, check Dad’s old safe-deposit records. Adrian’s been moving things since Dad died.”
The video ended.
Silence filled the cabin.
Then Adrian said, almost conversationally, “He should have minded his own business.”
Claire made a broken sound.
Grace stared at him.
“You knew.”
Adrian shrugged once.
“He was not supposed to be in that building.”
That was not an accident denial.
Not grief.
Not innocence.
It was proximity to confession.
“Did you lock him in?” Grace asked.
Adrian smiled faintly.
“I didn’t say that.”
“But you know he wasn’t supposed to be there.”
He looked at Claire.
“She always drags you into messes, doesn’t she?”
Claire’s whole body recoiled.
For the first time since Grace arrived, Claire looked at Adrian with open revulsion.
That changed the room more than the gun had.
He saw it too.
Whatever control he had over Claire was gone.
So he did the one thing men like him always do when the story collapses.
May you like
He abandoned persuasion and went for force.
Adrian threw the grocery bag at Grace’s face and charged.
