Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE KIOSK

Her name was Nora Bell.

Fifty-eight.

She ran the beach kiosk during summers.

She remembered Lily.

“I found her crying near the dunes.”

“Why didn't you call police?”

“I tried.”

The storm damaged the kiosk line.

Her cell phone battery had died.

Nora led Lily behind the kiosk because the wind was worsening.

She gave her an old towel.

Then left briefly to get help from a nearby maintenance building.

When she returned—

Rachel had already arrived.

“Why didn't you come forward afterward?”

Nora looked embarrassed.

“I saw the news.”

“What news?”

Diane's attorney had issued a statement describing Lily as briefly separated and quickly recovered.

Nora assumed the family had resolved it.

Then she saw a later article about bruises.

She contacted police.

Nora had witnessed something important.

After Caleb released Lily, Megan grabbed the child.

Diane shouted at Megan.

Owen shouted at Diane.

Thomas arrived from farther down the beach.

Then Caleb shoved Thomas.

During the confusion Megan told Lily:

“Run behind the kiosk.”

Not abandon her.

Hide.

Megan had tried to protect her.

Then Diane forced Megan into the SUV.

“How?”

Nora said:

“She grabbed her arm and told her Rachel would lose Lily if police got involved.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Diane used custody fear.

Again.

Different daughter.

Same tool.

Megan had spent the entire drive screaming to turn around.

This changed Rachel's understanding.

Megan had not failed Lily by carelessness.

She had been coerced and panicked.

Rachel called her sister.

“Come over.”

Megan arrived crying.

Rachel hugged her.

First time since the beach.

“I thought you'd hate me.”

“I was angry.”

“You should be.”

“No.”

Rachel pulled back.

“You tried.”

Megan shook her head.

“I still got in the car.”

“Yes.”

“I should have stayed.”

“Yes.”

Neither woman needed fake absolution.

Megan made a mistake under fear.

Diane exploited it.

Both truths.

Then Nora identified something else.

Before Diane's SUV left, Thomas remained on the beach.

He did not leave with them initially.

He got into a second vehicle.

Blue.

The third car Lily had drawn.

Thomas had never mentioned it.

Rachel confronted him.

“What was the blue car?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Gerald's old business partner.”

Rachel felt exhausted.

“Who?”

“Martin Kell.”

“Why was he there?”

“He wanted the Shoreline records too.”

Another person.

Another secret.

But this one led to the biggest financial twist yet.

Shoreline Development had not simply lost Rachel's money.

Some of its property had later become enormously valuable coastal land.

And someone had been collecting royalties from it for years.
