Chapter 7 - DIANE'S VERSION OF PROTECTION

Diane finally agreed to speak to Rachel with attorneys present.
She looked tired.
Not defeated.
Still Diane.
Rachel placed Lily's wrist photographs on the table.
“You told her this was what happens when children see things.”
Diane closed her eyes.
“I was trying to scare her into silence.”
Rachel stared.
“You admit that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought Owen would expose everything.”
“So you scared my child.”
“I didn't know Caleb would grab her.”
“You brought her to a secret extortion meeting.”
“I didn't bring her. She followed Megan.”
Rachel almost stood.
Her attorney touched her arm.
Diane continued.
“I was trying to keep this family together.”
Rachel laughed.
“There is no sentence you've said more often while tearing it apart.”
Diane flinched.
For once.
Rachel asked why everyone returned to the beach after driving away.
Diane looked at Thomas.
Then confessed.
They had not turned around because they realized Lily was missing.
Megan realized first.
She screamed at Diane to stop.
Diane refused.
Why?
Because she believed Caleb might still be near the kiosk.
She was afraid police attention would expose the trust records.
Megan threatened to jump from the moving SUV.
Thomas finally forced Diane to turn back.
Rachel stared.
“You knew Lily was missing before you returned.”
Diane said nothing.
“How long?”
“Twelve minutes.”
Rachel's eyes filled.
“You chose twelve minutes of protecting yourself over my child.”
Diane's voice cracked.
“I thought she was with Owen.”
“That is worse.”
“I panicked.”
“No.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“You calculated.”
That distinction mattered.
Panic was confusion.
Diane had weighed outcomes.
Records.
Scandal.
Lily.
And for twelve minutes, chose records.
Diane began crying.
Rachel did not comfort her.
Then Diane said something unexpected.
“I wasn't protecting myself.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“Who then?”
“Thomas.”
Thomas looked up.
Diane explained.
The Shoreline transfer had not been her idea alone.
Thomas had needed money for a failed medical-equipment business.
The $110,000 transfer went through Shoreline, then into Thomas's company.
More money followed.
Diane took responsibility publicly inside the family because she believed Thomas's reputation could not survive it.
Thomas stared.
“Don't.”
Rachel looked at her father.
“Is that true?”
He whispered:
“Yes.”
The theft was no longer one controlling mother and one passive father.
Thomas had motive.
Diane had method.
Gerald had concealment.
Megan had unknowingly forged a release.
A family system.
Then Diane added:
“And Caleb wasn't working for Owen.”
Rachel went cold.
“Who was he working for?”
Diane looked at Thomas.
Thomas began shaking his head.
“No.”
Rachel whispered:
“Dad?”
May you like
Diane answered.
“Thomas hired him.”
