Chapter 5 - LILY'S VIDEO

Lily Thompson had recorded something the official livestream missed.
Her phone had been running before the event.
She was filming a behind-the-scenes clip for her class social account.
At 6:42 p.m., twenty minutes before the demonstration, the video captured Evelyn and Zach standing beside the equipment closet.
Their voices were low.
But clear.
Evelyn:
Remember, make her react.
Zach:
What if she stops?
Evelyn:
Then don't let her.
Zach:
Her knee?
Evelyn:
That's the point.
Then Gregory Vale entered the edge of frame.
Marie watched the video with Simone and Detective Lin.
Vale said:
Once she goes down, keep the cameras on her. Don't cut the feed.
Zach looked uncomfortable.
“I’m not trying to really hurt her.”
Evelyn laughed.
“She survived surgery. She’ll survive embarrassment.”
Marie stopped the video.
Not because she could not hear more.
Because she had already heard enough.
Detective Lin looked at Lily.
“Why didn't you show us this last night?”
Lily started crying.
“I forgot it was recording. I found it this morning.”
Marie moved toward her.
Then stopped.
Asked first:
“Can I hug you?”
Lily nodded.
Marie wrapped her arms around the teenager.
Lily whispered:
“I thought it was supposed to be fake.”
“So did I.”
That mattered.
Everyone in the gym had been manipulated into believing they were watching entertainment.
Only Evelyn and Vale knew it was meant to manufacture evidence.
Zach stood somewhere in between.
Participant.
Son.
Idiot.
Adult.
Not innocent.
Not architect.
The video shifted the legal landscape.
Vale’s attorney contacted police by afternoon.
He denied orchestrating violence.
Claimed he understood the event to be “controlled athletic theater.”
The email and video made that position fragile.
Evelyn hired counsel.
May you like
Zach hired separate counsel.
For the first time in their lives, mother and son were no longer speaking through the same story.
