Chapter 6 - WHY EVELYN WANTED THE GYM

Evelyn did not want the gym for sentimental reasons.

Not really.

The financial records proved that.

She wanted money.

Three years earlier, without telling Marie, Evelyn borrowed heavily against her own house to fund Zach’s failed supplement company.

Zach did not know the full amount.

He thought their mother invested $80,000.

It was closer to $310,000.

The business collapsed.

Interest accumulated.

Evelyn refinanced.

Then borrowed again.

By the time Vale appeared, she was facing foreclosure.

Vale offered a solution.

If Evelyn could deliver control of Gardner Performance Lab—or pressure Marie into a distressed sale—Vale's buyer would pay a substantial “family transition consulting fee.”

Enough to save Evelyn’s house.

And enough to finance Zach's next venture.

Marie sat across from Simone reading the bank documents.

“So she tried to steal my company to fix his failure.”

Simone nodded.

“Yes.”

Marie almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was familiar.

Zach fails.

Evelyn rescues.

Marie absorbs.

Their whole family in three lines.

When Marie was nineteen, she worked two jobs while Zach played competitive sports.

“He needs the opportunity,” Evelyn said.

When their father died, Marie paid funeral costs.

“Zach is too young for this burden.”

When the gym debt came due, Marie signed the loan.

“You're better with money.”

Every strength became an invoice.

Every competence created obligation.

Now Evelyn had simply taken the logic to its legal conclusion:

Marie had something.

Zach needed something.

Therefore the family could redistribute it.

Marie called her mother from Simone's office.

Counsel on both sides listened.

“Why didn't you ask me for help?”

Evelyn's voice was cold.

“Because you would have said no.”

Marie stared.

That answer was so honest it almost hurt less.

“You don't know that.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Then you knew I didn't consent.”

Silence.

Marie continued.

“And you did it anyway.”

Evelyn said:

“You would survive losing part of the gym.”

There it was.

The sentence underneath everything.

Marie closed her eyes.

“And Zach wouldn't survive losing another business?”

“He’s your brother.”

May you like

“So I am supposed to bleed because he bruises?”

Evelyn hung up.
