Chapter 17 - ROBERT’S SENTENCE

The criminal case did not become the dramatic catastrophe some relatives predicted.

Robert faced charges related to electronic fraud, fiduciary misuse, and identity-related offenses.

Some older conduct could not be prosecuted.

Some was difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt.

He accepted a negotiated resolution.

Restitution.

Probation.

Restricted fiduciary service.

A suspended custodial sentence conditioned on compliance.

Emily attended sentencing.

Robert looked at her afterward.

“You got what you wanted.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“What else do you want?”

“Nothing from you.”

That hurt him.

She saw it.

For decades Robert believed Emily’s anger still meant attachment.

That she would eventually return to the role he understood.

Responsible daughter.

Financial backstop.

Problem solver.

Now she wanted no punishment beyond what law required.

No revenge.

No rescue.

Just distance.

Robert whispered:

“I did everything for this family.”

Emily looked at him.

“No. You used everyone for the version of family you wanted.”

He flinched.

Then:

“You benefited.”

“Yes.”

That surprised him.

Emily continued.

“I grew up in a house your business helped pay for. I benefited from money that belonged to me and money that didn’t. That doesn’t make the accounting honest.”

Robert had no answer.

For once, complexity did not save him.

It clarified.

Susan attended separately.

They remained legally married but lived apart.

She began therapy.

Robert refused.

That was his choice.

Emily learned not to make recovery another family project she managed.
