Chapter 18 - LILY RODE IN SUSAN’S CAR

Two years after the storm, Lily asked to see Susan.
Not because Emily suggested it.
Because Lily wanted to.
The first meeting took place at a therapist’s office.
Second at a café.
Sixth at a park.
After a year of stable contact, Lily asked:
“Can Grandma pick me up from dance?”
Emily’s entire body reacted before her mind did.
No.
Never.
The storm.
The SUV.
The gate.
Then she looked at Lily.
Nine now.
Confident.
Therapy.
Boundaries.
Susan had followed every rule for nearly two years.
Emily did not answer immediately.
She spoke to Naomi.
Spoke to Susan.
Then created conditions.
Direct route.
No passengers.
Location sharing.
Emily available.
One pickup.
Susan agreed without complaint.
At the dance studio, Lily walked toward Susan’s modest sedan.
Susan opened the rear door.
Lily stopped.
“Can I sit in front?”
Susan froze.
The old drawing.
The seat with Lily’s name.
Then she smiled sadly.
“When you’re old enough and it’s legal.”
Lily laughed.
“Fine.”
She climbed into the back.
Susan buckled her.
Did not say:
Miranda’s children come first.
Did not say:
Stop being dramatic.
Did not say:
Your mother will pay.
She said:
“Ready?”
Lily nodded.
“Yes.”
Emily watched from across the parking lot.
She cried after they drove away.
Not because she trusted perfectly.
Because trust had become something measurable.
Not blood.
May you like
Not title.
Repeated safe behavior.
