Chapter 1 - THE OLD MAN ON THE FLOOR

Malcolm Vale had spent forty-six years learning how people behaved when they wanted something from him.
Investors became charming.
Politicians became attentive.
Strangers remembered his birthday.
Relatives who never called suddenly had ideas about legacy.
But servants saw something different.
They saw impatience.
Entitlement.
Cruelty without witnesses.
That was why Malcolm put on the gray wig.
The plan had been simple.
One evening.
One disguise.
One test.
No one in the mansion knew except his chief of staff, Eleanor Grant, and the head of security, Thomas Reed.
Malcolm became “Walter,” an elderly temporary servant brought in because three members of the household staff were supposedly away.
Gray wig.
Thick glasses.
Slightly hunched posture.
Dark servant jacket.
White gloves.
He hated how convincing he looked.
At sixty-eight, he did not need much help appearing older.
What surprised him was how quickly Serena stopped seeing him as human.
She arrived at the Vale mansion at six-thirty wearing cream silk and diamonds Malcolm had given her two months earlier.
His fiancée.
Thirty-one.
Beautiful.
Intelligent.
Socially effortless.
The woman he planned to marry in eleven days.
Her brother Lucas followed behind her with a drink already in hand.
Malcolm walked past carrying a silver tray.
Serena glanced once.
Then stuck out her leg.
Deliberately.
Malcolm caught his shoe on her ankle.
He hit the marble floor hard.
The tray flew.
Porcelain shattered across the room.
Serena burst out laughing.
“Watch it, old man!”
Malcolm looked up.
Not acting now.
Truly stunned.
Lucas laughed too.
Serena pointed toward the broken dishes.
“CLEAN IT UP.”
Malcolm stayed still for half a second.
Then slowly pushed himself onto one knee.
He began collecting pieces.
Not because she ordered him.
Because he wanted to know how far she would go.
A piece of porcelain lay near Serena’s shoe.
She nudged it toward him.
“Faster.”
His hand stopped.
Lucas took a drink.
“Seriously, where did Malcolm find this one?”
Serena shrugged.
“Temporary staff. After tonight, none of them matter.”
Malcolm looked up.
“What do you mean?”
Serena crouched in front of him.
Close enough that he smelled her perfume.
“Know your place.”
She smiled.
“After tonight, every servant here is gone.”
Malcolm’s expression changed.
Cold now.
“Will they?”
Serena’s smile faded slightly.
Malcolm stood.
Slowly.
The hunched posture disappeared.
His shoulders straightened.
He reached up and removed the glasses.
Lucas stopped drinking.
Malcolm pulled away the gray wig.
Lucas’s face went white.
“Oh God…”
Serena stumbled backward.
“Malcolm…?”
He removed the servant jacket.
Underneath was the black suit he had worn earlier that afternoon at Vale Holdings.
Perfectly pressed.
Perfectly recognizable.
Serena’s mouth fell open.
Lucas lowered his glass with a trembling hand.
Malcolm stood completely upright before them.
May you like
No one spoke.
And for the first time since Serena Cross entered his life, Malcolm saw her without the smile she had practiced for him.
