Chapter 4 - THE DOCUMENT LUCAS SHOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT

Lucas said nothing.
Serena tried to step between them.
“Malcolm, don’t.”
He looked at her.
“What revision?”
She exhaled.
“There was a proposal.”
“From whom?”
“My lawyer.”
“Which lawyer?”
No answer.
Eleanor already knew.
She placed a second folder on the table.
Malcolm opened it.
Draft Post-Marital Governance Addendum.
Prepared by Cross & Vale Strategic Counsel.
Malcolm frowned.
He had never heard of the firm.
The document proposed that upon marriage Serena receive:
limited authority over private household administration,
co-signing power over selected family investment vehicles,
appointment rights to two foundation advisory seats,
and emergency durable authority if Malcolm was “temporarily incapacitated.”
The word incapacitated bothered him most.
He looked at Serena.
“When were you going to show me this?”
“At dinner tonight.”
“The same night you told staff they were gone.”
She said nothing.
Lucas tried:
“It’s normal planning.”
Eleanor asked:
“Why does your sister need emergency authority over the Margaret Vale Foundation?”
Lucas shrugged.
“Continuity.”
Eleanor smiled without warmth.
“She’s thirty-one. She has never managed a foundation.”
Serena snapped:
“I run a nonprofit board.”
“A museum friends committee,” Eleanor said.
Malcolm almost smiled.
Then he read deeper.
A clause allowed Serena to nominate a “family representative” to certain investment committees.
Eligible representative:
Lucas Cross.
Now Malcolm understood why Lucas knew about the revision.
He looked at him.
“What exactly were you expecting to manage?”
Lucas raised both hands.
“Nothing unless you approved it.”
“Then why is your name here?”
“Because Serena trusts me.”
Malcolm looked at Serena.
“And you expected me to sign this tonight?”
“Yes.”
“Why tonight?”
She hesitated.
That was enough.
Eleanor answered.
“Because tomorrow morning the Vale Family Trust votes on the Northstar acquisition.”
Malcolm turned.
The acquisition was worth $1.8 billion.
If Serena had temporary co-signing power over one of the family investment vehicles before the vote, her status could be used to influence the transaction.
Not control it alone.
But influence.
Especially if Malcolm later became “temporarily unavailable.”
His stomach tightened.
He looked at Serena.
“What have you done?”
Her face changed.
Not guilt.
May you like
Fear.
And for the first time that night, Malcolm realized tripping a servant might be the least important thing Serena Cross had done.
