Chapter 10 - EMMA'S LAST RECORDING
Emma’s voice memo lasted forty-three seconds.
No distress.
No violence.
Just an eight-year-old talking to herself while playing with Claire’s old phone that had been placed in her backpack.
“Aunt Vanessa says I have to wait by the pool until Caleb comes back.”
A few seconds later:
“She says Mommy is busy.”
Then footsteps.
Vanessa’s voice, farther away:
“Stay right there.”
The recording ended.
The evidence proved Vanessa directed Emma to remain at the pool.
Vanessa changed her story again.
She admitted telling Emma to wait.
Why?
Because she expected Claire or Caleb to return within minutes.
She denied knowing Emma would enter the water.
That defense mattered.
If Emma entered the pool on her own, Vanessa could argue tragic negligence rather than intentional killing.
Claire hated the possibility because it sounded plausible.
Emma loved water.
She could swim a little.
She was impulsive.
The prosecution needed causation.
Then pool records produced another detail.
The safety cover for the shallow training lane had been retracted remotely at 2:49 p.m.
Normally it remained extended when no instructor was present.
The control panel required a staff code.
The code used belonged to Coach Dana Price.
Dana denied being there.
Her code had been shared with Grant’s company during maintenance.
Grant said he never used it.
Investigators checked remote logs.
The retraction command came from a tablet connected to Westbridge guest Wi-Fi.
Device model matched Vanessa’s tablet.
Vanessa’s attorney produced sales records showing thousands of identical devices.
Not enough.
Then the tablet itself was missing.
Vanessa claimed it had been stolen months ago.
Claire remembered seeing it at Sunday dinner the week before Emma died.
Margaret remembered too.
Vanessa said they were mistaken.
Caleb said his mother used it that morning.
Three witnesses.
Still no device.
Grant finally broke further.
He told police Vanessa asked him for the pool cover code months earlier.
“She said Caleb wanted to swim after school.”
“Did you give it to her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know she used it the day Emma died?”
“No.”
Grant’s cooperation became dangerous for Vanessa.
So she attacked him.
She claimed Grant had secretly planned everything because he was desperate over business debt.
She produced messages where Grant wrote:
If Caleb’s trust comes through, we survive.
True.
Another:
We need Emma’s share out of the equation somehow.
Grant went pale.
He explained the message referred to restructuring the trust so Caleb could borrow only against his own share.
Vanessa’s attorney suggested darker meaning.
She was willing to redirect suspicion toward her husband.
Claire watched the family collapse exactly as Vanessa intended.
If everyone looked guilty, no one looked certain.
Then investigators found the original context.
Grant’s next message, recovered from cloud backup:
Maybe Henry’s attorney can separate the shares legally.
That supported Grant.
Vanessa had omitted it.
Evidence manipulation.
Another charge.
Then a forensic team recovered Vanessa’s missing tablet from a recycling facility.
It had been factory-reset.
But hardware identifiers matched the device that retracted the pool cover.
The tablet had been at Westbridge.
Vanessa’s story narrowed.
She claimed Caleb took it.
Caleb denied it.
Then a fingerprint examiner found Vanessa’s prints on the back.
Expected.
It was hers.
No proof she used it that afternoon.
But the device also contained a deleted screenshot.
The pool-control screen.
