Chapter 4 - THE SAFE KEY
Evelyn woke on the fifth day.
Not fully.
Enough to open her eyes.
Enough to recognize Richard.
Enough to panic when she saw him.
That reaction changed everything.
Richard stepped toward the bed.
“Evelyn.”
Her heart monitor accelerated.
Her hand clawed weakly at the blanket.
Dr. Ward immediately moved Richard out.
Emily stood in the hallway and watched him collapse into a chair.
“She’s afraid of me.”
Nobody answered.
Later, when Evelyn was more alert, Detective Bell showed her photographs one at a time.
Richard.
Samuel Mercer.
Naomi Hale, Richard’s older sister and Hale Meridian’s chief financial officer.
Several staff members.
Evelyn could not speak around the breathing tube.
She responded with eye blinks and small hand movements.
At Richard’s photograph, she cried.
At Mercer’s, her heart rate rose sharply.
At Naomi’s, she turned her face away.
Bell did not treat reactions as proof.
Good.
Evidence needed more than fear.
Then Emily remembered the ring.
It had been removed at the hospital and placed in police property.
Detective Bell examined it again.
The onyx setting twisted.
Underneath was a tiny metal shaft no longer than a fingernail.
A key.
Richard stared when Bell showed him.
“I didn’t know that was there.”
Bell’s expression suggested he found that difficult to believe.
Emily did too.
Richard had inherited the ring from his father.
But maybe inheritance did not include all its secrets.
A tiny serial number on the shaft matched a high-security document safe in Evelyn’s private office at Hale Meridian.
Police opened it with counsel present.
Inside were three things.
A handwritten notebook.
A flash drive.
And a sealed letter addressed:
IF I AM INCAPACITATED OR DEAD, GIVE THIS TO OUTSIDE COUNSEL.
The flash drive contained a forensic review of Hale Meridian.
Millions of dollars in undocumented transfers had moved through subsidiaries controlled by Naomi Hale.
Temporary loans.
Consulting fees.
Off-book guarantees.
Evelyn had been investigating them quietly.
The emergency board vote Richard mentioned was not routine.
Evelyn planned to suspend Naomi pending audit.
If Evelyn died before the vote, control passed temporarily to Richard as surviving co-trustee.
That made Richard look worse.
Much worse.
He stood to gain power immediately.
But then Bell opened the sealed letter.
Evelyn had written it eleven days earlier.
Richard is not clean in this. He has hidden family problems from me for years. But the person I am afraid of is Naomi.
Richard stared at the page.
Then closed his eyes.
