Chapter 8 - EVELYN TESTIFIES
Evelyn’s testimony happened from a hospital rehabilitation suite six weeks after the funeral.
Not in court.
In a recorded deposition with lawyers present.
She looked thinner.
Her voice remained weak.
But her memory was clear enough where it mattered.
She described discovering the financial transfers.
She described confronting Naomi privately.
Naomi told her the transactions had saved the company and that no one would thank Evelyn for “destroying a family over accounting.”
Then Samuel Mercer began visiting the mansion more often.
Evelyn grew suspicious.
She copied records.
She prepared the safe.
She wrote the letter.
On the morning she collapsed, she confronted Richard and learned he had known about some of Naomi’s conduct.
Evelyn demanded his signet ring because Richard’s father once told her the hidden key opened the family contingency safe.
Richard refused at first.
Not because he knew what the key did.
Because the ring was sentimental.
During the argument, Evelyn grabbed his hand and pulled it off.
Then her legs weakened.
She remembered a metallic taste.
A glass of water Naomi had brought upstairs fifteen minutes earlier.
That was new.
“Did you see Naomi put anything in the water?” the prosecutor asked.
“No.”
“Did anyone else touch it?”
“I don’t know.”
Precision.
Still no claim beyond memory.
She remembered waking briefly after Mercer arrived.
Hearing Naomi’s voice.
Hearing Richard crying.
Unable to move.
She tried to speak.
Nothing happened.
Then darkness.
The coffin came later in fragments.
Pressure.
Cold.
Wood.
No sense of time.
She tried moving her fingers.
Tried breathing harder.
Tried scraping the lining.
Then she heard someone outside.
Emily.
“I thought if I could make one sound,” Evelyn whispered, “someone might decide I was still a person before they decided I was a body.”
Emily cried when she heard that.
Evelyn’s deposition destroyed Naomi socially but did not prove every criminal element by itself.
The final link came from Hale Manor’s kitchen system.
A smart appliance log showed Naomi used the private beverage station at 8:11 a.m.
The water glass Evelyn drank from was prepared there.
A search of Naomi’s office found an empty blister pack matching one of the sedatives.
Naomi’s attorney called it planted.
