THE WOMAN WHO GAVE HIM ANOTHER WOMAN’S CHILD

Damian took Amelia and Leah upstairs to his private office.

Not as prisoners.

Not quite as guests.

His men remained outside.

The restaurant below reopened only after every phone had been checked for photographs.

Damian sat across from Amelia.

Leah remained in her arms.

The child had stopped crying.

She pressed one hand against Amelia’s neck as though confirming she was real.

Damian placed the hospital bracelet on the desk.

“My wife’s name was Elena.”

Amelia looked at the child.

“Did she give birth to Leah?”

“No.”

“Then why did everyone believe she did?”

“Because that is what she told me.”

Two years earlier, Elena arrived at the Caruso estate after midnight.

Blood on her coat.

A newborn in her arms.

She told Damian the baby was theirs.

Said she had hidden the pregnancy for protection because enemies had threatened the family.

Damian knew the story made no sense.

But Elena had been missing for six months.

He wanted to believe reunion more than he wanted truth.

Three hours later, Elena died from internal bleeding.

Private doctor.

Closed report.

No police.

The baby survived.

Damian named her Leah.

The child never cried loudly.

Never babbled.

Never spoke.

She stared at doors.

Flinched at white coats.

Slept only with the velvet rabbit.

“Who examined Elena?” Amelia asked.

“Dr. Paul Voss.”

She knew the name.

He was the obstetrician who delivered Amelia’s daughter.

He was also the doctor who told her the baby died.

Amelia’s hands tightened around Leah.

Damian saw.

“What happened that night?”

She told him.

Amelia had been twenty-eight.

Unmarried.

Working double shifts.

The father left before the second trimester.

Labor began early but not dangerously.

The baby was healthy.

A girl.

Six pounds, four ounces.

Amelia held her for forty-three minutes.

Then a nurse said the child needed routine observation.

The baby never returned.

Dr. Voss entered three hours later.

He said sudden respiratory failure.

No viewing allowed.

Hospital policy.

Closed infant casket.

Amelia signed forms while sedated.

She never questioned the paperwork until now.

Damian asked:

“Did you name her?”

“Rose.”

Leah lifted her head.

“Wose.”

The second word she had ever spoken.

Amelia began crying.

Damian looked away.

Not because he felt nothing.

Because he felt too much.

His security chief entered.

“Dr. Voss died eighteen months ago.”

“How?” Damian asked.

“Car accident.”

“Body?”

“Cremated.”

Damian leaned back.

Another death without examination.

His world was full of them.

Amelia asked:

“Where is Elena buried?”

“Family crypt.”

“We need DNA.”

Damian’s eyes sharpened.

“You think the woman buried there isn’t Elena?”

“I think my daughter was declared dead while alive.”

That answer was enough.

The crypt was opened that night under private legal supervision.

The coffin contained a woman.

DNA testing would take hours.

But the medical examiner found something immediately.

The woman had never given birth.

No recent pregnancy.

No postpartum changes.

Elena had not delivered Leah.

Then the examiner found a surgical scar behind the dead woman’s ear.

An identity implant used in witness-protection programs.

Damian looked at the body.

“This isn’t my wife.”

The woman buried as Elena was someone else.

His real wife had brought Leah to him.

Then disappeared again.

Or someone wearing Elena’s face had.

Amelia returned to the estate nursery with Leah.

Inside the velvet rabbit, beneath the bracelet, she found another object.

A microfilm strip.

Three words printed along the edge:

BENNETT INFANT TRANSFER.

A second line:

RECIPIENT: DAMIAN CARUSO.

The kidnapping had not ended with Amelia losing her child.

Someone had selected Damian before Leah was born.
