Chapter 9 - THE HOSPITAL SHOOTING
The three gunshots outside Room 412 came from Michael Trent.
Police proved that later.
He had returned to the hospital after the first attempt failed.
Not to finish Daniel personally.
To recover a phone dropped by one of the attackers.
Hospital security interrupted him.
He fired.
One guard was wounded.
Michael escaped down the stairwell.
Traffic cameras caught his car three blocks away.
Then a toll camera placed him heading south.
He was arrested the next afternoon at a private airfield.
Carlo was arrested two days later.
The case against Carlo was slower.
No dramatic confession.
No single message saying kill Daniel.
Instead:
payments,
trust motive,
communications with Michael,
security information,
foundation transfers,
and a recorded call.
Michael:
If the boy lives, the review happens.
Carlo:
Then make sure it doesn’t.
That line ended most of Carlo’s defense.
Still, prosecutors separated conduct carefully.
Michael faced attempted murder-related charges, conspiracy, assault, weapons offenses, financial crimes, and obstruction.
Carlo faced conspiracy and financial crimes tied to the scheme.
Thomas Kane pleaded guilty to unlawful access and conspiracy-related conduct after admitting he sold security information while consciously avoiding the reason.
Vincent was cleared of involvement.
He resigned anyway.
Gabriel asked why.
“My brother used my company to get to your son.”
“That wasn’t you.”
“No.”
Vincent looked at Daniel.
“But I built a system where one password and one desperate relative could become a weapon.”
Gabriel understood.
