Chapter 13 - THE PRISONER WHO STILL HAD A BOARDRichard received no visitors.

That was the official record.

Hale discovered seven unrecorded meetings.

Each had been entered as attorney consultations, but the lawyers named in the logs denied attending. Security footage from the federal facility had been overwritten through a maintenance account linked to a subcontractor owned by Pike Capital.

Richard had lost Vance Logistics.

He had not lost the habit of building structures inside other structures.

Evelyn entered the prison interview room with Hale and Rebecca. Richard sat behind the glass, his hair shorter, his face thinner, his expression unchanged.

“You look like your mother,” he said.

Evelyn did not react.

“You knew Marian?”

“Not personally.”

“That answer is designed to survive later evidence.”

He smiled.

“You taught me well.”

“No. You studied me.”

“That too.”

Hale placed the photograph of the motel vending machine against the glass.

“Where is the archive?”

Richard glanced at it.

“I have never been to Scranton.”

Rebecca produced the photograph of him outside the motel.

He looked at it longer.

“Images are flexible.”

“Your watch placed you there,” Hale said.

Richard’s smile faded slightly.

Evelyn leaned closer.

“Rose believes you hid evidence with Victoria’s family. Someone reached it before she did. Who?”

Richard looked directly at her.

“Your father.”

Henry was under supervised medical care in Manhattan. His movements were monitored.

Evelyn said, “Try again.”

“I did not say Henry moved it today. I said Henry created the retrieval plan.”

Hale asked, “When?”

“Twelve years ago.”

Richard explained that Henry had built a contingency network after Marian vanished. Evidence caches were placed in locations connected to people Northstar might later recruit, bribe, or compromise.

“Victoria’s mother cleaned one of Northstar’s hotels,” Richard said. “Henry knew the daughter was ambitious. He predicted someone would eventually use her.”

Evelyn felt anger rise.

Even before Richard had chosen Victoria, Henry had reduced her life to a probability.

“Where is the evidence now?”

Richard looked amused.

“You think I know?”

“You sent the shooter.”

“No.”

“He used your name.”

“Then someone wanted Rose to believe I still controlled the board.”

“Do you?”

Richard leaned back.

“I controlled people by giving them reasons to protect themselves. That system does not require me.”

Rebecca asked, “Who is Daniel Cross?”

For the first time, Richard hesitated.

“Rose’s guardian.”

“Her handler,” Evelyn said.

“Both.”

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Richard looked at Hale.

“Closer than he thinks.”

Hale’s jaw tightened.

Richard continued.

“Cross did not disappear after the guardianship investigation. He joined it. He learned that Northstar was not one clinic or one network. It was a method.”

“What method?” Evelyn asked.

“Turn identity into property. Declare the owner incapable. Transfer control legally. Make the theft look like care.”

Evelyn knew that already.

Richard shook his head.

“No. You know what happened to individuals. You do not know what Northstar was built to reach.”

He tapped one finger on the table.

“Pension funds. Family offices. charitable endowments. Sovereign accounts. Any pool of money controlled by a person whose competence can be challenged.”

“The Miller fund was a test,” Rebecca said.

Richard smiled.

“Your fund was the prize.”

Evelyn asked, “And Rose?”

“The replacement trustee.”

“She is trying to freeze the trust.”

“She is trying to prove it belongs to her.”

“Does it?”

Richard studied her.

“That depends which twin Henry carried from the hospital.”

The line was meant to wound.

It succeeded only because the possibility already existed.

Hale’s phone buzzed. He read the message and went still.

The motel vending machine had been found abandoned near a highway.

Inside was a steel case.

Empty.

Except for a prison visitation card.

The card authorized entry for one person.

Special Agent Owen Hale.

Hale looked through the glass.

Richard smiled.

“You see?” he said. “Closer than he thinks.”

A guard opened the interview-room door.

Another agent entered and whispered into Hale’s ear.

Hale turned to Evelyn.

May you like

His face had lost all color.

“Daniel Cross is my father.”
