Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WITHOUT HER NAME

Rachel had been moved to a private residence after a state inspection threatened to expose Grayhaven. The orderly provided medication logs bearing the initials V.S.

Police raided a farmhouse outside Indianapolis.

They found Rachel in a locked upstairs room.

She was thirty-seven, underweight, and disoriented after years of unnecessary sedatives. She recognized the locket before she recognized Daniel. When Lily entered with her therapist two days later, Rachel touched the crescent burn on her own hand and began to cry.

Lily did not run into her arms. She stood by the door.

Rachel respected the distance.

Recovery would not behave like a movie reunion.

Victoria was arrested for fraud, unlawful confinement conspiracy, and identity falsification. She immediately blamed Martin Greer and Grayhaven’s owner, Dr. Elliot Shaw. Her attorneys argued that the initials V.S. referred to Vanessa Stone, a former nurse.

A Vanessa Stone had indeed worked at Grayhaven.

More troubling, Rachel’s medical file contained intake videos. In one, she said Victoria saved Lily from dangerous people and begged the facility not to release her location to Daniel.

Victoria’s defense released the video publicly.

Rachel appeared lucid.

She later explained that Dr. Shaw threatened to separate her permanently from Lily unless she read prepared statements. But proving coercion after eight years would be difficult.

The financial case was stronger. Auditors traced Hearthwell’s hidden ownership to a trust benefiting Victoria.

Then they discovered a second beneficiary.

Rachel Brooks.
