THE BROTHER IN THE MISTRESS'S FLAT

Thomas surrendered through counsel.
He looked nothing like Eleanor.
Tall.
Fair hair.
Reserved.
But Margaret’s eyes were unmistakable.
He knew who Eleanor was.
She did not know him.
That imbalance shaped the entire meeting.
“You could have contacted me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I was told you knew.”
“By whom?”
“Adrian.”
Of course.
Adrian told Thomas that Eleanor had rejected him years ago after learning of his existence.
He said Margaret left documents proving Eleanor wanted the trust kept away from “the illegitimate child.”
No such documents existed.
Thomas spent years resenting a sister who did not know he existed.
Then Julian contacted him.
He offered recognition.
Board access.
A negotiated share.
In exchange, Thomas would support temporary removal if Eleanor became “unfit.”
Thomas agreed.
At first.
Then he saw the synthetic documents.
He became suspicious.
He went to Camille’s flat because Julian stored papers there.
He copied them.
That was why he remained in London.
Not to help Julian.
Not entirely.
To protect himself.
He turned over a hard drive.
Inside were draft minutes for an emergency Ardenbridge board meeting.
Eleanor would supposedly collapse during a presentation.
Julian would request medical intervention.
Adrian would produce an emergency incapacity certificate.
Thomas would confirm family history of “cognitive decline.”
The board would transfer temporary voting rights.
Eleanor stared.
“How were they planning to make me collapse?”
Thomas looked at Julian.
Julian said nothing.
Camille whispered:
“The vitamins.”
Everyone turned.
Julian had given Eleanor a supplement pack three months earlier.
He said the clinic was testing a personalised wellness programme.
She barely used it.
Camille had seen identical packets at Julian’s flat.
She asked what they were.
He said sleep support.
Laboratory testing found Eleanor’s unused packets contained a legal sedative at low dose.
Not enough to cause severe harm.
Enough to create fatigue, confusion, slowed speech.
If taken consistently, she might look impaired during a board meeting.
Julian said:
“I didn’t know what Adrian put in them.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“You gave them to me.”
“I thought they were safe.”
“You wanted me impaired enough to lose my company.”
He had no answer.
No violence.
No dramatic poisoning.
Just calculated chemical manipulation disguised as care.
Eleanor’s anger changed.
The affair hurt.
The theft enraged.
This ended the marriage completely.
Julian was arrested for conspiracy, fraud, and attempted unlawful control of corporate assets.
Adrian faced broader charges.
Thomas received conditional immunity for cooperation pending review.
Camille faced investigation for her company’s role.
She hired separate counsel.
Good.
No dependence on Eleanor.
Then the financial audit revealed the missing five million.
It had not gone to Julian.
Not Adrian.
Not Thomas.
It went into a trust in Eleanor’s name.
ARDEN WOMEN'S CONTINUITY FUND.
Beneficiary:
Camille Laurent.
Camille stared.
“I’ve never heard of it.”
The trust had been created twenty-nine years earlier.
Before Camille was born.
By Margaret Arden.
Why would Eleanor’s mother create a fund for Julian’s future mistress?
The answer arrived through birth records.
Camille Laurent was not Camille Laurent at birth.
She was born:
Camille Arden Vale.
Biological mother:
May you like
Margaret Arden.
Camille was Eleanor’s half sister.
