Chapter 1 - WHAT DID YOU TELL HER?

Natalie Carter remembered the sound of the glass before she remembered the pain.

A sharp crack.

A kitchen tumbler hitting tile.

Then her left foot slid beneath her.

She reached for the counter.

Missed.

Her body twisted.

And she hit the floor hard enough to knock the air from her lungs.

For one stunned second, she could not breathe.

Then pain tore across her lower abdomen.

Natalie grabbed her stomach.

“No.”

Another cramp hit.

Stronger.

She screamed.

“MY BABY!”

Her hands shook as she tried to push herself upright.

Her arms gave way.

She fell back onto one elbow.

“HELP ME!”

The house was empty.

Ben had left forty minutes earlier.

He said he was going to the pharmacy.

Natalie reached for her phone on the counter.

Too high.

She dragged herself across the tile.

Every movement made the pain worse.

“Please…”

Her fingertips caught the charger cable.

The phone slid.

Dropped.

She grabbed it and called 911.

By the time paramedics arrived, Natalie was crying so hard she could barely answer questions.

Thirty-one.

Fourteen weeks pregnant.

No previous miscarriages.

Severe cramping.

Bleeding.

The ambulance ride became a blur of fluorescent lights and clipped voices.

At the hospital, nurses moved quickly.

Ultrasound.

Blood tests.

A doctor speaking gently.

Then the sentence Natalie would hear for the rest of her life.

“I’m so sorry.”

She stared at the ceiling.

“No.”

The doctor’s expression did not change.

“We can’t detect cardiac activity.”

Natalie shook her head.

“No.”

Ben arrived twenty minutes later.

He stood beside her bed looking pale.

He touched her shoulder.

Natalie turned away.

She did not know why.

Maybe because grief made every touch feel wrong.

Maybe because he smelled like expensive cologne he did not normally wear to buy cold medicine.

Maybe because he kept checking his phone.

Hours later, after medication and paperwork and the terrible quiet that follows a life-changing sentence, Natalie asked the nurse if she could walk.

“Slowly.”

Natalie stepped into the corridor wearing hospital socks and her plastic bracelet.

She wanted air.

Water.

Anything that did not smell like antiseptic and loss.

She walked past a nurses’ station.

Turned the corner.

And stopped.

Ben was standing near the vending machines.

His hands were around another woman’s waist.

Sophie Lane.

His former fiancée.

And he was kissing her.

Not a confused kiss.

Not comfort.

Not an accident.

A kiss with history inside it.

Natalie could not move.

Then something broke loose in her throat.

“BEN?!”

They separated instantly.

Ben went white.

Sophie stared.

“Natalie?”

Natalie rushed toward them.

Her body was still weak.

Her vision blurred through tears.

“OUR BABY JUST DIED!”

Ben reached for her.

“Natalie, please—”

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the corridor.

Sophie stepped backward.

Natalie pointed at Ben.

“AND YOU’RE KISSING HER?!”

“Natalie—”

He reached again.

She knocked his hand away.

“DON’T TOUCH ME!”

People were staring now.

A nurse moved toward them, then stopped when Natalie raised one hand.

Sophie looked from Natalie to Ben.

Her expression changed.

Confusion replaced guilt.

Then fear.

She whispered:

“Your baby?”

Natalie stared at her.

Sophie’s voice shook.

“You said she didn’t want the baby.”

Everything inside Natalie stopped.

The corridor went silent.

Ben closed his eyes.

May you like

Natalie slowly turned toward Sophie.

“…What?”
