Chapter 7 - THE MONEY BEN NEVER MENTIONED
The recording did not expose a crime.
It exposed motive.
Sophie asked Ben why he lied about the pregnancy.
Ben answered:
Because if you knew I wanted the baby at first, you’d think I was a monster for changing my mind.
Then:
I loved the idea until I saw what it would cost.
Sophie:
Money?
Ben:
Everything.
A mortgage.
Daycare.
Natalie cutting hours.
The wedding.
Her student loans.
My promotion getting delayed.
Natalie listened from Claire’s couch.
She felt strangely calm.
The baby had become an expense column in Ben’s fear.
That did not mean he wanted the miscarriage.
It meant he had begun resenting a future he helped create.
Then another line.
Sophie:
So why stay engaged?
Ben:
Because the condo is in both names and her father put up the down payment.
Natalie stopped the recording.
Claire looked at her.
“What?”
Natalie stood.
“Our condo.”
Ben had insisted they buy before marriage.
Natalie’s father contributed $85,000 toward the down payment as a gift to Natalie.
The deed listed both Natalie and Ben.
Their ownership shares were not specified.
Ben had been paying part of the mortgage.
He may have believed ending the engagement would force an immediate sale.
That was not proof he cheated for property.
But it was a financial conflict Natalie had ignored.
She hired attorney Mara Chen.
Mara reviewed the purchase file.
The down-payment gift letter was explicit:
Gift to Natalie Carter only.
Ben had signed an acknowledgment.
Mara said:
“He may have an ownership interest. That doesn’t mean half automatically. We document contributions and negotiate.”
Natalie stared at the papers.
“I don’t want revenge.”
“Good.”
“I want out.”
“Better.”
The condo became the first practical step.
Not because property mattered more than grief.
Because betrayal leaves administrative debris.
Joint accounts.
Utilities.
Wedding deposits.
Insurance beneficiaries.
Emergency contacts.
