Chapter 1 - THE NAME ACROSS THE ROOM

Victoria Sterling did not slap Elena Rossi.

She chose something worse.

In the middle of Aurelia's crowded dining room, beneath gold chandeliers and the gaze of Manhattan's wealthiest guests, Victoria seized the front of Elena's burgundy waitress uniform and dragged her away from the table.

Elena stumbled across the polished black marble. A wine glass tipped behind her, spilling red across white linen. Conversations died one by one until the only sound was the sharp rhythm of Victoria's heels.

“You're nothing but a servant!” Victoria shouted.

Elena's cheeks burned. She could feel every face turning toward her: executives, donors, politicians, and people accustomed to watching cruelty as long as it arrived dressed in diamonds.

“Mrs. Sterling, please let go.”

Victoria tightened her fist in the fabric. Her deep-purple gown shimmered beneath the chandelier, and the diamonds at her throat flashed as she smiled.

“You spilled wine near me.”

“The glass was already at the edge of the table. I didn't—”

“Are you correcting me?”

Elena saw the floor manager standing near the kitchen doors. He looked at Victoria, then at the private room full of Vale Hospitality board members, and did nothing.

Victoria pulled Elena closer.

“Know your place.”

Her other hand clamped onto Elena's shoulder. With one violent motion, she tore the burgundy fabric along the white collar.

Elena gasped and caught the damaged uniform against her chest. Several guests reacted in shock, but no one stepped forward.

Something cold slipped from beneath Elena's blouse.

The small antique silver locket she had worn since childhood dropped into view. It swung on its chain, turning once in the golden light. A tiny bird was engraved across its oval face, one wing raised above a spray of stars.

Elena grabbed it instinctively.

“Don't touch that.”

For the first time, Victoria's smile changed.

It lasted less than a second—an almost invisible tightening around her mouth—before the contempt returned.

Across the dining room, a chair moved back sharply.

Adrian Vale had risen from the board's central table.

Until that moment, he had watched the disturbance with the controlled stillness of a man accustomed to others resolving problems before they reached him. He wore a black suit and an open-collar white shirt, and the people beside him seemed to lean away when he stood.

Now he was not looking at Victoria.

He was staring at the locket.

Elena closed her fingers around it. The fear on her face deepened as Adrian began walking toward her.

The guests fell completely silent.

Victoria released Elena's uniform and turned toward him.

“Adrian?”

He did not answer.

Each step erased something from his usual expression. Authority gave way to disbelief. Disbelief gave way to an emotion Elena could not name.

Victoria moved slightly into his path.

“Do you know her?” she asked.

Adrian passed her without looking.

He stopped directly in front of Elena.

His eyes moved from the silver bird in her hand to her face. He studied the line of her brow, the small curve beside her left eye, and the dark hair that had fallen loose when Victoria grabbed her.

Elena backed up half a step.

Adrian's controlled expression finally broke.

“Elena...?” he whispered.

May you like

Victoria's eyes widened.

Elena froze.
