Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO OPENED THE GATE

For six months, Victoria had helped keep Elena alive.

Then the payments stopped.

Lucia's recording explained why. Graham discovered what his daughter had done. He threatened to accuse Victoria of participating in the kidnapping and to destroy Lucia's family if either woman contacted the police again. Lucia moved Elena across three states, used her deceased niece's documents, and lived under constant fear.

“I did wrong things to keep you,” Lucia said on the tape. “But I did not take you from your family. I took you from the man who was taking you away.”

Elena wept for the first time since the restaurant.

She also became angry. Lucia had loved her fiercely, but love did not erase the years of secrecy or the identity built on another child's record. Elena could honor the rescue without pretending every later choice was right.

Adrian listened to the full tape in the presence of lawyers and a court reporter. When the description of the service van began, he left the room, returned, and asked them to continue from the exact second they had stopped.

Victoria responded with a sworn statement.

She admitted opening the gate and sending money. She said Graham told her he was moving Elena to a safe house because of a kidnapping threat, and she believed Lucia had misunderstood. Later, she claimed, Lucia demanded money and threatened to expose the family.

It was a carefully constructed defense. The payments could be compassion or blackmail. The gate could be rescue or confusion. Graham was dead and unable to contradict her.

Then selected portions of Lucia's recording appeared online.

The released clips omitted Graham carrying Elena to the van. They began with Lucia admitting she used false documents and hid from authorities. Commentators called her a child thief. Elena received threats. Aurelia's parent company argued that reinstating her would create a security risk.

Only six people had received the complete digital copy.

Victoria accused Adrian of leaking it to discredit Lucia and reduce Elena's claim. Adrian accused Victoria. The court appointed a special master to control the evidence because neither side could be trusted.

The Vale board placed Adrian on temporary leave. His financial interest was now impossible to ignore: if Elena's identity failed, he kept a fortune.

Victoria assumed emergency voting authority through the foundation's shares.

Her first action was to offer Elena a more dangerous settlement. Elena would receive full financial value for the disputed stock over twenty years, but no voting rights, no public finding of identity, and no access to the company's historical records.

“You can have wealth,” Victoria said. “You do not need a name.”

Elena refused again.

Forensic specialists traced the leaked audio to a file exported from the office of Victoria's public-relations counsel. Victoria blamed a junior contractor, who vanished before he could be subpoenaed.

The special master then obtained Aurelia's security recordings from the night of the assault.

The main footage showed what every guest had seen.

A service-corridor recording showed something else.

Twenty minutes before Victoria grabbed Elena, she had summoned the floor manager and pointed to Elena's employee photograph on a tablet.

“Get that face out of the room,” Victoria said. “Adrian cannot see her.”
