Chapter 3 - THE MECHANIC CHARLES REMEMBERED

Jack had met Charles Archer nine years earlier.

Not socially.

Through a prototype-testing contractor.

Jack’s small shop then handled overflow diagnostics for experimental fleet vehicles.

Charles occasionally arrived without assistants.

He liked talking to technicians before engineers told him what a problem “really meant.”

“He asked annoying questions,” Jack said.

Sophie almost smiled.

“That sounds like him.”

Jack continued.

“One time your engineers said a thermal fault was impossible. Your father asked me what I thought.”

“What did you say?”

“That impossible faults usually mean someone stopped measuring the right thing.”

Charles hired Jack’s shop for six months.

Then corporate procurement moved testing in-house.

They barely spoke afterward.

Maya opened the folder labeled JACK W.

Inside were maintenance diagrams of the Porsche.

One annotation circled the hidden panel screws.

J.W. notices disturbed fasteners.

Sophie looked at Jack.

“He picked you.”

“No.”

“He literally wrote your initials.”

Jack shook his head.

“He picked a habit.”

That distinction mattered to him.

Then Preston produced his own packet.

Jack Walker disciplinary history.

Seven years earlier, Jack had been fired from a luxury dealership for unauthorized access to a customer telematics module.

Sophie looked at him.

“You left that out.”

“You didn’t ask for my résumé.”

Preston smiled.

“The dealership called it tampering.”

Jack answered:

“They were resetting fault codes without completing warranty work.”

“Were you authorized to open the module?”

“No.”

“So you broke procedure.”

“Yes.”

The dealership later paid a civil settlement over warranty fraud.

Jack had still been fired.

Sophie saw the pattern.

Useful truth inside bad procedure.

That did not automatically make Jack right now.

Then Maya opened another file from the encrypted drive.

Audio transcript.

Charles:

If Jack Walker is the person who finds this, do not give him company authority. He will hate that sentence, which is one reason I trust his eyes more than his ambition.

Jack laughed.

Sophie did too.

Then the next line appeared.

The brass key opens Locker 9 at Halcyon Storage.

Inside is the original governance covenant and the Route Systems valuation file.

Preston stood.

“This has gone far enough.”

Maya looked at him.

“No. It has finally started.”

Then Sophie turned to security.

“Nobody leaves with that key except me.”

Jack looked at Preston.

For the first time, the older man was no longer hiding his fear behind outrage.

He was calculating time.
