Chapter 1 - THE GARAGE

Camille Arden came home on crutches and made it four steps into the entryway before Lenora Ellery kicked one crutch sideways.
Camille lost her balance.
She hit the floor hard on her hip and protected the heavy brace surrounding her operated leg.
Pain flashed up her side.
Lenora looked down at her.
“You’re sleeping in the garage.”
Camille stared.
“What?”
Grant came from the kitchen.
For one second relief hit her.
“Grant.”
He moved toward her.
Then grabbed her by the upper arm.
Camille’s relief disappeared.
He started dragging her across the tile toward the open attached garage.
“Grant! I just had surgery!”
He would not meet her eyes.
Behind them, Lenora picked up Camille’s phone.
She dropped it into her own purse.
“This house won’t be yours much longer.”
Camille stopped fighting for half a second.
Not because she believed Lenora.
Because Grant did not react.
He pulled Camille past the threshold into the garage.
The concrete was cold through her hospital clothes.
Camille reached toward him.
“Why are you doing this?”
Grant backed toward the interior door.
“Just do what Mom says.”
He slammed it.
The deadbolt turned.
Camille lay beside the workbench, breathing through pain.
Her crutches were inside the house.
Her phone was inside Lenora’s purse.
Her post-operative instructions said:
keep weight off the leg,
take medication on schedule,
avoid falls,
call if pain increased sharply.
She had been home less than five minutes.
Then she saw the crack.
A long line in the concrete under the old workbench.
Camille dragged herself closer.
Dust had collected in one edge.
She scraped it away with her fingers.
Metal.
Not rebar.
A rectangular lip.
A concealed compartment beneath a removable concrete panel.
Footsteps sounded outside the garage door.
Camille pulled more dust away.
Stamped into the metal:
E.A.
Her grandmother.
Evelyn Arden.
Camille whispered:
“Grandma… what did you hide here?”
The doorknob twisted.
Camille froze.
The door opened three inches.
Grant looked inside.
Then his eyes dropped toward the exposed metal edge.
His face changed instantly.
Not confusion.
May you like
Recognition.
He knew the compartment existed.
