Chapter 1 - THE BLACK BAG

Mark Carter came through the back door and heard Lily crying before he saw her.
His twelve-year-old daughter was curled against the kitchen cabinets, both arms raised protectively.
Dark-purple bruises already covered her upper arms and shoulders.
Diane Carter had one hand locked around Lily’s shoulder.
“You saw nothing!”
She struck Lily’s guarded upper arm.
Then the opposite shoulder.
Lily cried out.
Diane grabbed her again.
“Nothing! Understand?!”
Mark moved before he thought.
He crossed the kitchen, pulled his mother away from Lily, and shoved her back toward the counter.
“Get away from my daughter!”
Lily crawled behind him and clung to his shirt.
Diane froze.
Not ashamed.
Afraid.
Lily lifted one trembling hand and pointed toward a small black bag beside Diane’s purse.
“Dad… look inside that bag.”
Diane’s face went pale.
She lunged.
Mark reached it first.
“Don’t open it!”
He ripped the zipper apart.
Inside were twelve metal key rings.
Each carried a paper tag with a street address.
There were also:
sealed envelopes,
photographs of houses,
inspection stickers,
and plastic access cards.
Mark stared.
One key ring was labeled:
18 WILLOW BEND.
His house.
He pulled out the matching envelope.
Inside was a work order.
SATURDAY — 7:30 A.M.
CARTER RESIDENCE.
KITCHEN / LOWER WALL ACCESS.
OWNER NOT TO BE PRESENT.
USE FAMILY KEY.
Mark looked at Diane.
“What is this?”
She said nothing.
He unfolded a second page.
It contained a photograph of his kitchen.
A red circle had been drawn around the wall behind the refrigerator.
Below it:
REMOVE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE BEFORE MUNICIPAL REVIEW.
Mark’s breathing changed.
“What certificate?”
Diane looked toward Lily.
The child started crying harder.
“She saw me put it in the bag.”
Mark turned back.
“Put what?”
Diane whispered:
“You don’t understand what your father left behind.”
Thomas Carter had been dead six years.
Mark had spent all six believing his father’s residential repair company had closed cleanly.

Now there was a key to Mark’s house in a bag full of strangers’ addresses.
And someone planned to enter his kitchen while he was gone.
