Chapter 1 - THE CAKE

Margaret Carter grabbed the birthday cake with both hands.
Nobody in the private dining room understood what she was doing until she threw it.
Lily raised her arms.
The soft cake struck them and burst apart, frosting splashing across her pale-blue dress, cheeks, and brown hair.
For one second the seven-year-old girl simply stood there.
Then her face crumpled.
Margaret pointed toward the door.
“You’re not my real granddaughter! Get out!”
Claire shot to her feet.
Lily clutched the handmade birthday card she had made for Ethan.
Margaret grabbed the child’s shoulder and shoved her several steps away from the table.
“I just wanted to sit with Daddy…”
Claire rushed forward and pulled Lily behind her.
At that exact moment Ethan entered the room.
He had stepped away to speak with the restaurant manager about a surprise dessert.
Now he saw:
frosting across Lily’s face,
Claire shaking with rage,
his mother standing beside the ruined table.
Claire shouted:
“Your mother threw her out!”
Ethan’s expression changed.
He crossed the room.
One sharp adult-to-adult slap sent Margaret stumbling sideways.
“You did that to my daughter?!”
He swept the remaining cake debris, paper plates, decorations, and gifts off the table.
Then he kicked an empty chair aside and pulled the birthday banner down.
The room went silent.
Ethan went immediately to Lily.
He lifted her securely into his arms.
She buried her face against his shoulder.
“She said I’m not really yours…”
Ethan held her tighter.
Then he walked directly toward Margaret.
“Mom… who told you Lily isn’t my daughter?”
Margaret touched her cheek.
Her confidence vanished.
“No one had to tell me.”
Ethan stared.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret looked at Claire.
Then at Lily.
Then back at Ethan.
“You stopped the adoption.”
Claire froze.
Ethan’s face went pale.
The room changed again.
Lily slowly lifted her head.
“What adoption?”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Claire stared at him.
Margaret whispered:
“You never told her?”
Ethan’s anger became something else.
Fear.
Not because Margaret had exposed a secret about whether he loved Lily.
May you like
Because she had just exposed a legal process the adults had deliberately kept away from a seven-year-old until they knew what it would mean.
And now Lily was looking at Ethan as if “Dad” had suddenly become a question.
