Chapter 3 - THE SIGNATURE
The next morning Ethan called family attorney Rachel Kim.
“Noah signed something?”
Rachel paused.
“What exactly did Margaret see?”
“A consent page.”
“That could mean several things.”
“Was there a signed consent in my file?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
“What?”
“It was not legally effective.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I did.”
“No, you told me Noah had not consented.”
“I told you we did not have valid consent.”
That distinction mattered.
Months earlier, Noah had signed a draft consent to stepparent adoption.
Then, before filing, he withdrew it.
Why?
Because the draft included language he did not understand.
Specifically:
termination of all legal parent-child rights and responsibilities upon final adoption.
Standard concept.
Emotionally devastating to him.
Noah told his lawyer:
“I know I haven’t earned fatherhood. I am not ready to sign a document saying I never mattered.”
His attorney advised him not to sign until he understood.
He withdrew.
The signed draft remained in the file marked:
WITHDRAWN — NOT FOR FILING.
Margaret saw the signature but apparently not the red withdrawal stamp on the back.
Or ignored it.
Ethan asked:
“Why was it in my home file?”
Rachel reminded him.
She had sent a complete copy of the mediation packet.
He printed it.
Then forgot it in the blue folder.
Margaret found it during birthday preparations.
Claire said:
“So Mom saw Noah signed, saw you paused, and decided Lily was not really yours?”
Ethan shook his head.
“That still doesn’t explain the rage.”
Exactly.
Margaret’s cruelty at the restaurant needed motive.
Not excuse.
Then Claire received an email.
From Noah’s attorney.
Subject:
MARGARET CARTER CONTACT.
Claire stared.
“What?”
Margaret had contacted Noah.
Twice.
Without telling anyone.
The first message:
If you care about Lily, sign the consent and leave her alone.
The second:
Ethan has paused because Claire cannot let go of you. Do not confuse that with him wanting you in Lily’s life.
Claire felt sick.
Margaret had inserted herself into the mediation.
Ethan called her.
“Did you email Noah?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To finish what you wouldn’t.”
“You told him Claire was the reason I paused?”
“I assumed.”
“Stop assuming.”
Then Margaret said:
“He answered me.”
Ethan froze.
“What did he say?”
Margaret read it.
Mrs. Carter,
I am not trying to take Lily from Ethan.
I am trying to avoid disappearing on paper before Lily is old enough to understand why I disappeared in life.
Please let her parents handle this.
Margaret’s voice cracked slightly.
Ethan heard the line.
Her parents.
Noah had called Ethan one of Lily’s parents.
Then why had Margaret become more hostile after reading it?
Claire asked.
Margaret did not answer.
Then Rachel Kim found another email in the mediation archive.
Margaret had not merely contacted Noah.
She had offered him money.
