Claire answered:
“No. Enormous means important.”
“Like a dinosaur?”
“Sometimes.”
Lily smiled.
Then:
“Did Ethan get scared?”
“Yes.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
“Of Noah?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Of making a decision for you that you might want to understand later.”
Lily thought.
“That’s weird.”
“Yes.”
Then Ethan sat with her.
He said:
“I want to adopt you.”
“Even if Noah exists?”
“Yes.”
“Even if I keep Ellis?”
“Yes.”
“Even if I call Noah Dad one day?”
The question hurt.

“It might feel strange to me.”

“But strange feelings are mine to handle.”
