Chapter 5 - THE MAN WITH THE SCAR

Cole Rainer had spent fifteen years in private security.

Military contracting.

Corporate protection.

Executive transport.

He worked for Grant through a security subcontractor.

Austin’s investigators had tracked him for years.

Never enough to charge.

Then Cole made a mistake.

He returned to King Street personally.

Police now had station footage.

Mara contacted Detective Elena Ruiz, who reopened Nathan’s homicide file through the district attorney.

Cole was detained for questioning two days later on an unrelated evidence-tampering warrant.

He asked for a lawyer.

Then changed his mind.

“I didn’t kill Nathan Boyd.”

Ruiz recorded everything.

Sadi watched later with Mara.

Cole said Nathan met Grant in Garage C.

The argument was about files.

Grant demanded Nathan surrender evidence.

Nathan refused.

Cole stood near the exit.

“What happened?” Ruiz asked.

Cole stared at the table.

“Grant grabbed the bag.”

“And?”

“Boyd pulled back.”

“And?”

“There was a struggle.”

Nathan struck a railing.

Then fell over the edge of a loading platform.

One level.

Not enough to guarantee death.

But he landed badly.

Head trauma.

Cole said Grant ran down.

Nathan was still breathing.

Sadi stopped the video.

“He was alive?”

Mara’s face tightened.

They continued.

Ruiz asked:

“Did you call 911?”

Cole looked away.

“No.”

“What did Grant do?”

“He checked the bag.”

Sadi made a sound.

Then:

“He said if we called from there, everything was over.”

They moved Nathan.

Staged the robbery.

Took his wallet and watch.

Dumped the body near a service road.

Sadi shut the laptop.

She could not breathe.

Mara waited.

Then Sadi whispered:

“He could have saved him.”

“We don’t know medically.”

“He was breathing.”

“Yes.”

That was enough for rage.

But still not proof of intent to kill.

Grant’s lawyer immediately attacked Cole’s credibility.

Cole was seeking immunity.

He had lied for years.

He had a violent record.

He was now blaming the richer man.

All true.

Then police found an old emergency-call draft on Cole’s phone backup.

Never sent.

10:47 p.m.

LOCATION: HARBOR GARAGE C.

MAN FELL.

NEEDS AMBULANCE.

Cole had started to call.

Someone stopped him.

The unsent draft became the first independent piece supporting his story.

Then another old record surfaced.

Grant’s phone connected to Harbor Garage C Wi-Fi at 10:42 p.m.

He had been there.

The Chicago flight was a lie.
