Chapter 7 - RUTH'S LETTERS
Ruth had known part of the truth.
Not all.
A second metal box was found in storage after Maya authorized a search of the Johnson property records.
Inside were letters from Caroline.
The first:
Richard is unstable with grief and rage. Eleanor must remain away until the custody situation is safe.
Another:
Do not contact him. His investigators are dangerous and will take her regardless of what she says.
Another:
She may call herself Ellie. Encourage Maya. The old name attracts attention.
Maya stopped reading.
Richard’s hands closed into fists.
Her lawyer said:
“Keep going only if you want.”
Maya did.
The letters showed Ruth believed she was participating in a temporary protective placement.
At least initially.
Caroline sent money for:
school,
therapy,
housing,
medical care.
Then, after two years, Ruth wrote back:
When does this end?
Caroline replied:
Richard has too much influence. Returning her would put everyone at risk.
Then:
Maya is settled now. Stability is the priority.
No court.
No independent child advocate.
No real custody process.
Just adults deciding.
By year five, Ruth’s letters changed.
She stopped asking when Maya would return.
She wrote:
She is ours in every way that matters.
Maya cried.

That sentence was loving.
And horrifying.
