Chapter 1 - THE ENVELOPE

Emily Carter’s ninth birthday cake had nine blue candles, white frosting, and a plastic silver crown she had insisted on wearing all afternoon.

By five o’clock, the living room was full of relatives, balloons, wrapping paper, and the bright, harmless chaos of a suburban birthday party.

Then Diane Carter grabbed Emily by the upper arm.

“You don’t belong here!”

Emily cried out.

The room went quiet.

Diane pinched the girl’s guarded shoulder and yanked her closer.

“You’re not even one of us!”

Emily twisted away, tears immediately filling her eyes.

Ryan Carter came running from the kitchen.

He saw his daughter crying, crossed the room in three hard steps, pulled Emily behind him, and knocked Diane’s hand away.

“Don’t touch my daughter!”

Emily clung to his shirt.

Diane did not look embarrassed.

She looked prepared.

She reached into her purse, pulled out a white envelope, and slammed it onto the birthday table beside the cake.

“Why are you defending her?”

Ryan stared at the envelope.

Diane opened it.

A laboratory report.

DNA PATERNITY ANALYSIS.

Ryan’s name.

Emily’s name.

Probability of paternity:

0.00%.

His face drained pale.

Diane shoved the report toward him.

“She isn’t your daughter.”

Emily began crying harder.

Claire Carter stood near the sofa, frozen.

Ryan turned slowly toward his wife.

“Is that true?”

Claire stared at the report as if it were written in another language.

“No.”

Diane laughed.

“Of course she says no.”

Claire stepped forward.

“No, I mean I don’t understand what that is.”

Ryan’s voice shook.

“Did you ever have a reason to think Emily wasn’t mine?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“No.”

Diane snapped:

“Then explain the DNA.”

Claire looked at Emily.

The child had buried her face against Ryan’s arm.

Claire’s shock changed into anger.

“Where did you get her DNA?”

Diane hesitated.

That mattered.

Ryan looked at his mother.

“Answer her.”

Diane’s confidence shifted by one degree.

“I used a private lab.”

“How did you get Emily’s sample?”

Diane looked toward the gift table.

Claire followed her eyes.

A pink hairbrush sat beside a pile of ribbon.

Emily’s brush.

Claire went cold.

“You stole hair from my daughter?”

“I confirmed the truth.”

“You tested a nine-year-old without telling us.”

Diane raised her chin.

“And I was right.”

Ryan read the report again.

Then something at the bottom caught his eye.

Sample source:

BUCCAL SWAB.

He looked up.

“Mom.”

Diane stiffened.

“This says cheek swab.”

Claire stared.

Emily had never given Diane a cheek swab.

Ryan held the report higher.

“Whose sample did you send in as Emily’s?”

Diane opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly the DNA report did not prove what she thought it proved.

May you like

It proved someone had tested a child.

The first mystery was whose child that sample actually belonged to.
