Chapter 3 - THE HOSPITAL CORRECTION
The hospital was now part of a larger health system, but archived records still existed.
Ryan and Claire submitted formal requests.
Before the hospital responded, the witnessed DNA results arrived.
Ryan opened them beside Claire.
Ryan Carter / Emily Carter:
PATERNITY EXCLUDED.
Claire gasped.
Then the second comparison.
Claire Carter / Emily Carter:
MATERNITY EXCLUDED.
Claire stopped breathing.
Emily was genetically related to neither of them.
For several minutes the room disappeared around them.
Claire whispered:
“They gave us the wrong baby.”
Ryan said:
“We don’t know that yet.”
But both knew the possibilities had narrowed.
Somewhere there might be another nine-year-old girl.
Their biological daughter.
The thought created instant guilt.
Emily was still theirs.
Still the child whose fevers they sat through, whose bicycle Ryan taught her to ride, whose hair Claire braided before school.
Biology did not erase nine years.
But biology now asked a second question.
Who was the child they had brought home?
The hospital called the next morning.
They had located an incident report from April 2017.
Two newborn girls on the same postpartum unit had been flagged for chart-label inconsistencies after nursery transfer.
Staff reviewed:
wristbands,
maternal matching bands,
feeding records,
electronic charts,
and discharge documentation.
The issue was marked resolved.
No DNA testing had been done.
Then the records specialist said:
“The final infant identity reconciliation sheet is missing from the archive.”

The one page that should have shown exactly which baby was matched to which mother was gone.
