Chapter 2 - THE WRONG SAMPLE
Diane admitted the cheek swab did not come from Emily directly.
It came from a sealed collection kit she found in Claire’s bathroom cabinet.
Claire remembered it immediately.
Three months earlier, Emily’s pediatrician had suggested an optional genetic wellness panel after repeated stomachaches. Claire had taken the cheek swab at home, then canceled the test when insurance refused coverage.
She never mailed it.
She forgot it in the cabinet.
Diane found it.
Ryan called the private laboratory.
The report was real.
The lab had received one alleged paternal sample and one alleged child sample. The two were not biologically father and daughter.
But the lab could verify only the relationship between the samples, not the identities of the people behind them.
Diane had labeled both.
Ryan asked:
“Where did you get my sample?”
“Your water bottle.”
Another sample taken without permission.
Ryan was furious.
Still, he needed the truth.
The next morning, Ryan and Emily gave new samples at an accredited clinic under witnessed identity procedures.
Claire did too.
Emily asked on the drive home:
“Are you still my dad?”
Ryan pulled over.
He turned toward her.
“Yes.”
“But Grandma said—”
“I don’t care what any paper says about who raised you.”
Emily cried.
Ryan did too.
That night Claire asked:
“What if the report is right?”
Ryan sat at the kitchen table.
“I don’t know.”
“Do you think I cheated?”
He looked at her.
“I don’t want to.”
“That is not the same as no.”
“I know.”
Claire opened Emily’s birth folder.
Hospital bracelet.
Footprint card.
Discharge papers.
Newborn photograph.
The photo tag read:
BABY GIRL CARTER — ROOM 418.
The footprint card read:
BABY GIRL CARTER — NURSERY B-12.
Ryan turned the footprint card over.
Faint handwriting:
REPRINT — ORIGINAL MISFILED.
Then Claire found another paper.
Dated two days after Emily’s birth.
NEWBORN IDENTIFICATION DISCREPANCY — RESOLVED.
Two infant records had temporarily been associated with incorrect maternal files.
