Chapter 5 - THE LETTER THEY NEVER RECEIVED
The hospital follow-up said:
No evidence was found of infant discharge to incorrect guardians.
No further testing recommended.
Ryan hated the wording.
No evidence.
Not certainty.
The Carter copy had been mailed to:
1437 Brookfield Lane.
Ryan and Claire had lived at:
1473 Brookfield Drive.
The letter went to the wrong address.
The hospital had investigated a possible newborn identity problem, sent the follow-up to the wrong house, and closed the matter.
Then witnessed testing of Melissa and Ava was completed.
The results ended the uncertainty.
Ava was Claire’s biological daughter.
Ava was Ryan’s biological daughter.
Emily was Melissa’s biological daughter.
The newborn girls had been switched.
All four adults cried.
Then both families faced the immediate question:
How do you tell two nine-year-old children that the adults around them have misunderstood their biology since birth without making either child feel exchanged?
A child psychologist helped.
No surprise meeting.
No language like real mother.
No language like wrong daughter.
Ryan told Emily:
“The hospital made a mistake when you were born. DNA says you were born to Melissa, but you came home with us.”
Emily cried.
“Do I have to leave?”
“No.”
Claire answered before Ryan could.
“No.”
Melissa told Ava the same.
Ava got angry.
“So my whole life is wrong?”
“No,” Melissa said. “The paperwork was wrong. Your life happened.”
Then the hospital reopened the nine-year-old incident.
A former nursery technician named Lorraine Pike remembered the night.
Printer failure.
Manual labels.
Two girls.
Shift change.
A bassinet moved.
She said:
“We caught a mismatch.”
Ryan answered:
“You clearly didn’t.”
Lorraine cried.
Then she said:
“But I don’t think the mistake happened where everyone thinks it did.”
Claire looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
