Chapter 9 - THE PHOTOGRAPHS
Evelyn arrived with three photo albums.
“I told them something was wrong,” she said.
Melissa sighed.
“Mom, you said the hat changed.”
“And the bassinet label.”
Evelyn knew how she had sounded.
A worried grandmother in a chaotic hospital.
Easy to dismiss.
Then they found the photographs.
At 2:22 a.m., Claire held a newborn labeled CARTER.
At 3:05, Melissa held one labeled GRANT.
At first that suggested the babies were correctly identified immediately after delivery.
Then Ryan said:
“Only if the labels were correct.”
Exactly.
Another photo, taken accidentally in the hallway at 3:48, showed two bassinets and a nurse handling a loose temporary tag.
The nurse was not Lorraine.
Her badge read:
M. DAWSON.
Agency nurse Megan Dawson had worked one temporary shift.
The hospital located her.
Megan remembered the printer failure.
She remembered one paper bassinet card falling to the floor.
“I put it back.”
“Which one?” Ryan asked.
She went pale.
“I don’t know.”
Then she remembered something more.
Both infants received supplemental feeding in the nursery.
Two nurses fed them, then returned them to bassinets.
Megan recalled someone saying:
“Which one was Carter?”
A real question.
They checked the tags.
If the tags were already wrong, the check only reinforced the mistake.
Then Megan mentioned a second safeguard:
cord blood.
Each infant had blood collected and linked to a maternal chart.
If any stored sample remained, genetics could help reconstruct the error.
One sample existed.
Label:
BABY GIRL CARTER.
Testing showed it did not match Claire.
It matched Melissa.
The cord blood itself had been labeled to the wrong family.
That pushed the identification failure earlier.
