Chapter 3 - THE NIGHT EMILY DISAPPEARED
Emily disappeared on October 14.
Ten years earlier.
She and James had been married five years.
No children.
They were trying.
At least James thought they were.
Emily worked as financial controller for Hale Biomedical, a medical-device company co-founded by Victor Hale and two investors.
The day she vanished, she texted James:
Running late. Don’t wait for dinner.
At 8:02 p.m., her phone went dark.
Her car remained in the office garage.
Her purse was found two days later near a commuter station.
No blood.
No signs of struggle.
No verified sighting.
Victor said Emily had been upset over work.
James hated him for that sentence.
It made disappearance sound voluntary.
Then detectives found an email Emily drafted but never sent.
Subject:
Something is wrong with the trial accounts.
That changed the investigation.
Hale Biomedical was conducting clinical trials for a cardiac-monitoring device.
Emily suspected money allocated for safety testing had been diverted.
Federal regulators later found accounting irregularities.
But nothing directly tied Victor to Emily’s disappearance.
The company collapsed three years later.
Victor left the state.
James never stopped believing the two stories were connected.
