Chapter 8 - EMILY LEFT A MESSAGE FOR LUCA

The clue was inside Luca’s coat.
Sewn beneath the lining.
Rebecca found it while helping him change into donated clothes.
A flash drive.
Wrapped in plastic.
Luca stared.
“I didn’t know.”
Emily had put it there without telling him.
The drive held one video.
Emily sat in a motel room.
Older.
Thinner.
Hair shorter.
Still unmistakably herself.
James could not breathe when she appeared.
“Luca,” she said, “if you’re seeing this, I didn’t make it back.”
Then:
“Find James Whitmore in Boston. The bakery is called Whitmore & Rye.”
James covered his mouth.
Emily looked into the camera.
“James, if he finds you, I’m sorry.”
He cried openly.
She continued.
“I should have trusted you. I thought staying away kept you safe. Maybe it only kept me alone.”
Then Emily said something that changed the case:
“Owen Grant knows where Victor hid the patient files. Victor is not the top of this.”
Victor was corrupt.
But Malcolm Price had directed the cover-up.
The device trial had caused more complications than reported.
Hannah tried to expose it.

Emily followed the money.
Price used Victor’s company and security people to bury both.
