Chapter 5 - WHY EMILY NEVER CALLED JAMES
This was the hardest question.
If Emily loved James, why not call?
Why let him grieve for ten years?
Mara found part of the answer in an old storage locker outside St. Louis.
Luca remembered a blue door with the number 318.
There were only three facilities near the shelter he described.
One had Unit 318 rented under the name Emma Gray.
Inside:
old clothes,
receipts,
newspaper clippings,
a disposable phone,
and six sealed envelopes addressed to James.
Never mailed.
His hands shook opening the first.
James,
If this reaches you, Victor may already know I’m alive.
Another:
I saw what happened to Hannah. I cannot bring that danger to you.
Another:
You will hate me for letting you think I left. I hate myself for it too.
The letters revealed Hannah’s identity.
Hannah Reed.
A former Hale Biomedical research nurse.
She had discovered altered adverse-event reports.
Emily met her secretly.
Hannah planned to testify.
Then her apartment caught fire.
Official ruling:
electrical fault.
Hannah died.
But her toddler son survived because a neighbor carried him out.
Luca.
Emily believed the fire was not accidental.
No proof then.
Only fear.
She took Luca when the child’s temporary guardian disappeared and social services records became strangely inconsistent.
Then she ran.
Why not go to police?
Because one detective handling Hannah’s case later took consulting work from Hale Biomedical security.
Emily stopped trusting local authorities.
