Chapter 13 - THE WRONG SHAW
Evan Shaw was forty-eight.
Former climbing instructor.
Custom fabricator.
Gavin’s older brother.
Same height range as the man in black.
But hallway footage showed Elias Ward.
Not Evan.
That was the trick.
Police had spent days assuming:
man in black = killer.
Actually:
man in black = visible visitor.
Evan entered through the hidden shaft before Ward arrived.
Never appeared on hallway camera.
He waited.
Then after Ward left, stepped into the apartment.
Michael knew him.
Maybe not well.
But enough not to panic immediately.
Evan had built the cane spike.
He knew exactly how it worked.
Jack confronted him.
Evan denied murder.
Then forensics found carbon-fiber dust in his workshop matching the spike residue.
Still not proof.
Then a hidden purchase:
replacement spike blank manufactured three weeks earlier.
One missing.
Then Evan’s phone, recovered from a storage unit.
Deleted message from Gavin:
WARD ENTERS FRONT. YOU WAIT BELOW. AFTER HE LEAVES, GET THE DRIVE.
Drive?
Michael’s burner phone was not the real target.
A black encrypted USB drive.
Containing evidence of Pike and Gavin’s hidden financial interests.
Evan’s task:
retrieve drive.
Not kill Michael.
At least according to Gavin’s message.
Then another:
IF MICHAEL RESISTS, DO NOT LEAVE HIM ABLE TO CALL.
That line changed the case.
Not explicit murder order.
Close enough to show anticipated force.
