Chapter 6 - PAUL DENTON
Paul Denton was not a snake expert.
That mattered.
He was a former grounds subcontractor who had worked for Hale Landscaping years earlier.
Arthur fired him after repeated safety violations.
Paul blamed Arthur.
Rebecca kept occasional contact because Paul later worked on properties she managed.
Detectives interviewed him.
He denied harming anyone.
Then they showed him the text.
He said:
“That was about Arthur’s grandson visiting.”
“Why did Rebecca care?”
Paul shrugged.
“She was planning to talk to Arthur.”
“About what?”
“The parcel.”
“Why mention the boy being outside?”
“No idea.”
Weak.
Then another message appeared from Paul to Rebecca:
You said scare, not hospital.
Rebecca replied:
Nobody was supposed to get bitten.
That changed everything.
Still, investigators did not assume the exact mechanism.
They asked:
“What was supposed to scare him?”
Paul requested an attorney.
Good decision.
Later, through counsel, he admitted involvement in an intimidation plan tied to the property dispute.
He refused to describe operational details beyond what investigators required.
This story will not either.
The important facts were:
a rattlesnake was deliberately introduced into the property environment,
Rebecca knew,
Paul participated,
and both claimed they expected Arthur to discover it before anyone was harmed.
That expectation did not make the plan safe.
Then detectives showed Rebecca the texts.
She said:
“I never wanted Noah near it.”
Detective Chen answered:
“Your message says you knew he would be outside.”
Rebecca looked down.
“I thought Arthur would see it first.”
